Marjorie C. Carlson (Dec. 2, 1918 – Jan. 13, 2008)
Marjorie Catherine Carlson, 89, a lifelong resident of Baker City passed away Jan. 13, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Services. A celebration of life was held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18th at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel followed by a vault Interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Rev. Aletha Bonebrake of St. Stephens Episcopal Church officiated. Visitation was held on Thursday, Jan. 17 at Gray’s West & Co from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Marjorie Catherine Emele was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Baker City to Harry and Edith (Brown) Emele. She was raised in Baker City and graduated from Baker High School. After high school, Marjorie worked for Leo Adler Publishing. In September of 1939, Marjorie quit her job and married her high school sweetheart John E. Carlson. She became a homemaker for her husband and the couple’s one son John H. Marjorie liked being in the outdoors, especially gardening and golf. For many years she and John were very active in the Baker City Golf Club. She was a very social person and spent lots of time with her friends and family. She is survived by her son, John Carlson of Portland, Ore.; sister, LaVelle Bonbright of Pendleton; brother-in-law, Duane Carlson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; nieces, Jan Denman and Lynn Smurthwaite; nephews, Rodney and Richard Carlson. She was preceded in death by her husband John in April of 2006. Memorial contributions can be made to the Baker City Golf Club in care of Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
Marihelen Ciesiel April 26, 1934 – Jan. 13, 2008)
Marihelen Ciesiel, a longtime Baker City, Ore., resident, died Jan. 13, 2008, at The Cottages in Weiser, Idaho. Marihelen’s vigil / wake was Wednesday evening at St. Francis de Sales. Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. Interment is at Mount Hope Cemetery. Marihelen was born on April 26, 1934, in Nocona, Texas, to Freda (Wilton) and Emmett Williamson. She was raised in Los Alamos, N.M., before it was an official town. She graduated from Los Alamos High School and went on to college at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, where she met and married Robert F. Ciesiel (deceased). They married on Feb 24, 1952, in Bernililio, NM. Starting a young family, the couple lived in Texas, Four Corners area of the desert southwest, Grand Junction, Colo., Portland, Ore. and moved to Baker in 1962. Marihelen taught P.E. at St. Francis Academy and was active at St. Francis Cathedral. Marihelen taught Sunday school/youth groups, was a Eucharist minister, and served as a Lector. She was an active participant in a spiritual wolf pack. Marihelen was a fiber artist, using many mediums especially weaving, knitting and spinning using wool garnered from their sheep farm. Many area school children learned about spinning and weaving through her presentations through the schools. Marihelen also did Living History reenactments at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Emigrant State Park, schools and others. Marihelen was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Marihelen is survived by her sister, Betty Peterson; six children, Tina Kitchin, Michael Ciesielski (Paula), Pam Hosseini (Jamshid), Amy Ross (Terry), Obie Ciesiel (Erin Watterson), and Emily Ciesielski (Ryan McMurry); 12 grandchildren, David Beam (Wendy), Michael Beam (Erin), Nema, Arman, Sheila Hosseini; Anna, Thomas Ciesielski; Carla Kitchin; Hailey Kay, Jye Ciesiel, Jordan, Reghan (Ciesielski) Marchek; six great grandchildren, Beckham Beam; Brady, Brooklyn Beam; Dalli, Sophia Ross and newborn baby, Jack Ross. Ila Wilbur (Feb. 21, 1922 – Jan. 18, 2008)
Ila Wilbur, 85, died peacefully on Jan. 18, 2008, in Richland, Ore. A family celebration/gathering will occur in her memory during the summer. Ila Pearl was born on Feb. 21, 1922, to Charles Burton Heller and Bertha (Ham) Heller in Bridgeport, Wash. She excelled in her schoolwork and graduated as Valedictorian from Brewster High School in 1939. After graduation she married Gene Housden of Brewster. They had four children before moving to Hermiston, Ore., in the early 1950’s. Later she married Raymond Wilbur and had two more children while residing in Montana and California. Ila enjoyed being outdoors, flowers, playing games and being with friends and family. She spent the last years of her life with Don and Judy North in Richland, Ore., a place she considered home. She is survived by her younger brother Max Heller of Brewster and by her five children, Robert Donald Housden of Cheney, Wash., Jack Larry Housden of Laguna Beach, Calif., Samuel Lee Housden of Glendale, Ariz., Alice Ann Cesarano of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lanny Wilbur of Townsend, Mon.; many in-laws; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Ila was preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie. Ila was a good woman and a loving mother and she will be missed by all who knew her.
