Wilma Cole (Dec. 6, 1945 – Jan. 23, 2008)
Wilma Cole, 62, of Baker City, died on Jan. 23, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Baker City, Ore. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield, Ore., at 11 a.m. Interment was held at Springfield Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. in Springfield. Wilma Ellen Cole was born on Dec. 6, 1945 in Visalia, Calif., to John and Nellie (Ainsworth) Cole. She was welcomed into a family of three brothers; Harvey Lee Cole, Ottawa (J.R.) Cole, Doyle Gene Cole and one sister, Ruth Cole. Wilma loved her family, friends and all animals. The members of the Haines Methodist Church were extra special to her because they welcomed her and Duffy (her schnauzer) into the congregation. It meant a lot to her to meet with people who love God, each other and critters too! Wilma was a very generous loving person and will be greatly missed by family and friends. She enjoyed the outdoors and especially appreciated owning three horses in her lifetime. Wilma is survived by her sister, Ruth Cole of Baker City and two beloved pets Duffy (a mini schnauzer), and a Keiko (a Siamese cat); sister in law Alma Cole of Cottage Grove, Ore., Carol and Al Cookson a former sister-in-law and her husband from Mountain Home, Ark. Numerous nephews, nieces, great and great great nephew and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers. Florence Haugsted (Nov. 8, 1919 – Jan. 24, 2008)
Florence Haugsted, 88, longtime Pine Valley resident, died on Jan. 24, 2008, at Elizabethan Manor Assisted Living Facility in Pendleton, Ore. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church. Officiating the service was Pastor Tony Brandon of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Richland. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception to follow immediately after the service in the Pine Valley Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. Interment at Pine Haven Cemetery. Florence Naomi (Fleming) Haugsted was born on Nov. 8, 1919 to Bert and Jennie Fleming in Walker, Iowa. She married Andrew (Andy) Haugsted on Aug. 29, 1937, at Noshua, Iowa in “The Little Brown Church in the Vale.” In 1938 they headed west, moving to Joseph, Ore. In 1940 they bought a ranch, making their home and livelihood farming in Pine Valley. In the 50’s they purchased ground in Halfway and developed it into what is known as “Andy’s Trailer Park.” In the late 60’s they decided to sell the ranch and move to the property in Halfway. Florence enjoyed her family, being outdoors and tending to her garden. Florence was a wonderful cook and was known for her famous potato salad. She also enjoyed canning, especially pickles and was nicknamed named the “pickle queen.” Florence enjoyed helping people whenever she could and was very active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Florence is survived by her children Charles Haugsted and his wife Libby of Pendleton, Ore., Larry Haugsted and his wife Viki of Halfway, Ore., Roscoe Haugsted and his wife Patty of Pendleton, Ore., Rosella Lusk and her husband Ron of Deltona, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Andy on Jan. 12, 2000, five brothers and three sisters. Beverly L. Kennedy It is with great sadness that the family of Beverly L. (Waltz) Kennedy of Bremerton, has to announce that her passing occurred on Jan. 17, 2008, at the age of 83, after a courageous battle against cancer. Born April 25, 1924, to Carlton and Elizabeth Waltz. Her father Carl operated Klover-Kist Creamery on Valley Ave. and mother, Elizabeth, sang in the Presbyterian Choir. Both participated in the Masonic/Eastern Star order. Beverly graduated from Baker City High, Baker City, Ore., in 1942, and then attended Linfield College, McMinnville, Ore., before marrying Robert D. Kennedy Jr. on October, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Kennedy was active in PTA, Cub Scouts and Blue Birds. She has particularly proud of her involvement in Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and her work with the PEO. She was an active member of the Kitsap Golf and Country Club for many years. Her main hobbies were her family, golf, gardening, baking cookies, painting and card playing (excelling in the game of bridge). She was employed at JC Penny part time. She was a member of Manette Community Church and more recently Central Kitsap Church (CKPC). She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert, four children; sons Robert D. Kennedy III and his wife Diane, D. Gene Kennedy and his wife Marion, Richard J. Kennedy; and daughter; Elizabeth (Liz) Grahn and her husband Gary. She has seven grandchildren; Christina Swartwood (Michael), Justin Kennedy, Frank Schram, Cary Schram (Katrina), Mark Kennedy (Donna), Lori Calvert (Dale) and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Sanders and her brother, Carl J. Waltz Jr. She was one of the first individuals to successfully receive an open heart surgery in 1959. Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the ladies from the CKPC who brought over meals, and we want to particularly thank the many caring people from Hospice, especially Julie, who were incredibly kind and loving in dealing with our wife and mom. There will be a memorial service celebrating her life sometime in the near future for family and friends. John Carrol Maynard John Carrol Maynard, 86, of Baker City passed away Jan. 22, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Care Center from natural causes. Services will be held at a later date. John was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Tillamook, Ore., to H. Clifford and Elsie Mae (Fletcher) Maynard. He was raised on a farm in McMinnville, Ore., and graduated from McMinnville High School. During high school, John met Betty Hackney and they were married Aug. 11, 1940, just after graduation. John and Betty had three children whom they raised in their hometown of McMinnville. In 1958, John and Betty moved to Baker City, were John ran a mobile diesel repair truck. John and Betty were both very active members of the Baker Elks Lodge, in not only the social events but also the community volunteering projects. John helped to build the bleachers for the Wade Williams Memorial Baseball Park. In addition to volunteering with the Elks, John was a volunteer firefighter for Baker City. John enjoyed gold mining and fishing when he was younger. He was a very hard worker and always gave back to the community. John could also be described as a bit stubborn and ornery; he had a definite opinion on how things should be done. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; daughter Elaine Joseph; grandson Sean Maynard; brother Eugene Maynard; and sister Bernice Widmayer. John is survived by his sons: John H. Maynard and his wife Misko of Olympia, Wash., and Ken Maynard and his wife Nona of Payette, ID; five grandchildren: Daniel Talley of Baker City, Warren Maynard of Payette, Idaho, Ted Talley of Portland, Ore., Debbie Gorte of La Grande, Ore., and Corrina Reno of Milton Freewater, Ore.; and numerous great-grandchildren; brother Frank Maynard of McMinnville, Ore.; sisters: Clara Speidel of Salem, Ore., Marian Carroll of Portland, Ore., and Donna Grant of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel Ann Smith (Oct. 25, 1916 – Jan. 22, 2008)
Hazel Ann Smith, 91, of Baker City, Ore., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Care Center. A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, followed by vault interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Bishop Ernie Collard officiated. A reception was held at the church following the service. Hazel was born Oct. 25, 1916 to James Robert Wanker and Zena Belle (Whitten) Wanker at the Wanker’s ranch in Medical Springs. Hazel was the youngest in the family, with four older sisters. As a young girl, she helped cook for the ranch hands. Hazel attended school in Medical Springs, and married Ernest Smith on June 28, 1943. Ernest and Hazel purchased the ranch in Medical Springs on which she was born and raised in 1943. They raised three sons, Gary, Dallas, and Larry. They sold the ranch in 1972 and moved to Baker City. At age 17, Hazel was a princess in the first Miners’ Jubilee, held in 1934. Hazel rode in the parade again in 2004. Hazel loved to go fishing, picking mushrooms, and spending time with her family. The family and neighbors would take a wagon and some cream cans to the mountains and stay for a week at a time to pick huckleberries. She won several contests for catching the biggest steelhead. She enjoyed quilting and embroidery, and still did perfect work at age 91. Hazel had a great sense of humor, always making others laugh, and had a kind heart. Hazel is survived by her husband, sons and daughter-in laws Gary and Judy Smith, Dallas and Peggy Smith, Larry and Deby Smith, 10 grandchildren and their spouses, three great-granddaughters, one great grandson with another expected in April, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
