Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Grim (Aug. 7, 1912-Feb. 16, 2008)
Elizabeth “Betty” Dorothea Eichler Grim, 95, died Feb. 16, 2008, at St. Elizabeth’s Health Services. Memorial Services will be Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Coles Funeral Home. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the Baker City Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Betty was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Laurel, Montana to George Phillip and Dortless Elize Hoffmann Eichler. She was the second of seven children and raised in Laurel and Fromberg, Montana. She attended high school and nurses training (at St. Vincent’s) in Billings, Mont. She did advanced training at John Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. Upon graduation she accepted a position as governess with the Stiver family in Butte, Mont. She met Samuel “Sam” Henry Grim Jr. at the Rose Gardens (a dance pavilion) in 1937. They were married on May 27, 1939 in Billings, Mont. They began their married life together in Republic, Washington. Betty worked many years at a maternity hospital, the Red Cross, and private duty nursing. She and Sam raised their family in Portland, Ore., Spokane, Washington, Billings and Butte Montana, Walla Walla, Wash., and Halfway, Ore. In 1961 they moved back to Portland, Ore., where they remained until August 2000 when they moved to Baker City, Ore. She was a member of the Lutheran Church. She was very active in the PTA while raising her girls. Also active in the community chest. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Sam on Sept. 6, 2000, her parents, two infant sons, three sisters, Katherine Ballard, Mary Flynn and Lydia Albrecht, brother Henry Eichler, and son-in-law Donald Hamilton. She is survived by her daughters Joanne Grim of Baker City and Janice Hamilton of Wellington, Utah. Sisters Freda Corbett of San Francisco, Calif., and Amelia Porter of Mayville, Mi.; grandson’s and their wives: Donald Samuel and Jeri Kaye Hamilton of Moab, Utah, Daniel Lawrence and Melissa Hamilton of Price, Utah; great grandson: Jayden Daniel and great granddaughters Emilyann and Ellianna Hamilton of Price, Utah; mutually adopted son and his wife Ralph and Cathee Mowett of Gresham, Ore., two nephews, and eight nieces, sister-in-law Edith Walsh of Seattle, Wash., and Velma Herdlick of Halfway, Ore. Andy Stenberg (Aug. 21, 1984-Feb. 10, 2008)
Andy Stenberg passed away Feb. 10, 2008 in a tragic car accident. He was born Aug. 21, 1984 in Boise, Idaho to loving parents Keith and Vikki Stenberg along with his twin sister Kendall. Andy is survived by Grandparents Osborn and Shirley Stenberg and Bill and Bobbi Dunn, parents Keith and Vikki, wife Elizabeth and step-daughter Emily, twin sister Kendall and her husband Josh Myers, brother Matt and his wife Lydia, nephew Trygg, and much more extended family. He spent his earliest years in Eagle, Idaho as a tiny little guy overflowing with heart and goodness with a smile that would not stop. The family moved to Swan Falls, Idaho, then Hagerman, Idaho, and then to Oxbow, Ore., in Hell’s Canyon. Andy attended Kindergarten through graduating High School in Halfway, Ore., where he learned to laugh, love, and appreciate the outdoors. After High School, Andy moved back to Boise, Idaho and went to work for Idaho Sand and Gravel as a heavy equipment operator. After just a short time, He entered the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union local #296 and began an apprenticeship program that he enjoyed and excelled in. There are no words to express the amount of heart and intensity Andy led his entire life with. His love, his heart, his eyes, his smile, his entire aura was magnetic and he was loved by countless people. When his cousin heard the news, she said, “Why does God always take the best ones?” We won’t know this until we meet him again in Heaven. Andy led a rich life in the 23 years he spent here with us. He was an Eagle Scout, an accomplished outdoorsman, a loving father and husband, a valued brother to many, and a true friend to all he met. He will be sorely missed by all of us. A memorial service was held in his honor Feb. 16 in Boise, Idaho. Andy's ashes will be added to the beauty of Hells Canyon at a later date. Some ashes and mementos will also be kept in a nitch wall at Cloverdale Cemetery in Boise. Vera Zimmerman (June 10, 1913-Feb. 12, 2008)
Vera Frances Zimmerman, 94, passed away peacefully, Feb.12, 2008 in Halfway, Ore. She was born on June 10, 1913 in King City, Mo.,to Theodore Lee and Nettie Frances (Jennings) Newman. In her younger years she lived with Pat’s (Pat Gossi’s) parents and another sister and helped to raise their children. She was a second mother to all of them and continued to be the rest of her life. Vera lived in several different states, but always came back to the Midwest. She was married and divorced in earlier years, but met her one true love, Richard Zimmerman and married him April 19, 1949. They were married 25 plus years. Vera worked at many jobs, but enjoyed dry farming with her husband Richard. She also worked as a nurse’s aid at the local hospital for many years where she always kept her patients in good spirits with her exuberance and sense of humor. Vera was very proud of her association with the Eastern Star while still living in Kansas. She held the offices of Treasurer, Conductress, Associate Conductress, Marshall, Adah, Ruth, Esther, Warden and was installing Marshall one year. Vera moved to Halfway in 2002 to be near to Pat, her closest relative. She was the youngest of six children and was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and most of their children, her husband Richard and numerous nieces and nephews. Vera is survived by her niece, Pat Gossi of Halfway, great niece JoRae and Robert Wickham of Oxbow, great great niece and nephew Candice Ann Wickham and Corby Jay Wickham and her dedicated and devoted caregivers Rose Darting and Lynn Melchior. There will be no formal services in Halfway. She will be interred next to her beloved husband in Hiawatha, Kansas at a later date. Claude Morin (March 30, 1910-Feb. 13, 2008)
Claude Orin Morin, 97, of Brookings, Ore., died Feb. 13, 2008, at a local hospital of age-related causes. Interment will be held in Baker City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at the First Presbyterian Church at 4th and Washington in Baker City, Ore. Arrangements are by Redwood Memorial Chapel 866-469-9112. He was born March 30, 1910 at the mouth of Pine Creek in Baker County, Oregon; the sixth of nine children born to Lewis Calvin and Laura Ellen (Phillips) Morin. As a young child, he moved to Hereford, Ore., where the family homesteaded a cattle ranch. He attended school in Haines, Ore., and graduated from Oregon State University in 1933 with a bachelors degree in forestry. On Dec. 31, 1930 he married Olive Josephine Harrison in Weiser, Idaho. The couple made their first home in Sumpter, Ore. Three sons were born of the union, Claude Jr., Harold and Forest. Mrs. Morin died on June 20, 1964. He subsequently married Elaine Horne Liddell on April 28, 1972. She died on April 19, 2007. Mr. Morin was employed with the U.S. Forest Service, and the family moved with his employment transfers to Wisconsin and several areas of Oregon and Idaho. He was stationed in New Meadows, Idaho for 13 years before transferring to the regional office in Ogden, Utah. His final career move was to the National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Mr. Morin retired from the Forest Service in 1973. In retirement, Mr. Morin traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and in many areas of the world including Egypt and the Holy Lands, Spain and other European countries. The Morins were members of the first group to travel to China following the opening of the country to visitors during the Nixon administration. He was currently a member of the Brookings Presbyterian Church. While living in Ogden, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and in Idaho, the Methodist Church. Ecumenical in thought, the family usually attended the church nearest their home while the children were growing up. Mr. Morin was a talented “fix-it” guy, and enjoyed making repairs to many things. He was a perfectionist and a very hard worker by nature. He had a winning smile, a good sense of humor, was affectionate and non-judgmental, and was everyone’s favorite uncle in the family. In younger years, he loved to dance, and while in New Meadows, Idaho, had started the first Boy Scout troop. He loved to grow flowers, and while living in Ogden, had planted and tended a large rose garden around the church and his home. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Claude Jr. and Bonnie Morin of Brookings; grandchildren, Laurie Larson and husband Don of Beaverton, Ore.; Kelvin “Kelly” and wife Paula Morin of Salem, Ore.; Kolleen Bennett and husband Dennis of Weston, Ore.; Joe Morin and wife Stephanie, and Peggy Crow and husband Tom, all of Brookings; and Trudy Kessler and husband Ed of Sandy, Utah; step-children, Scott and wife Skuntala Liddell, and Gary Liddell, all of Ogden, Utah; Kathy Bolte of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Dr. Bob Bolte; also of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters-in-law, Judy Morin of Salt Lake City and LaDonna Osborn of Appleton, Wash.; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first and second wife; two sons, Harold and Forest; four brothers Vernell, Ted, Pierce and Glen; and two sisters, Gladys and Nellie, and an infant brother and sister prior to Claude’s birth.
