(March 24, 1931-Feb. 23, 2008)

Ellen M Crampton, 76, died  Feb. 23, 2008 at St Elizabeth Hospital after a bout with pneumonia surrounded by family and friends.
It was her wish that there would be no funeral service or viewing and we honor her wishes.
Ellen was born March 24, 1931, at Murphy, Idaho, to Walker T. and Sarah (Churchill) Horton.
Ellen was a 25 year member of the Boise Eagles, and a 23 year resident of Baker City. She retired in 1993 from St. Elizabeth Hospital where she served as a scrub nurse and also a floor nurse in patient care.
Survived by husband Patrick Crampton; daughters, Merry Ellen Still, Rose Henderson, and Rhonda Sue and husband John Robinson, numerous step children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She requested nobody send flowers. Contribution in her honor to the Eagles Cancer Fund through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814 or your local Eagles Cancer Fund.


Forrest E. Deen
(Jan. 15, 1945-Feb. 24, 2008)

Forrest E. Deen, 63, of  Deputy, Ind., passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at Scott Memorial Hospital in  Scottsburg, Ind.
Mr. Deen was born on Jan. 15, 1945, the son of the late Frank E. Deen and Ethel M. (Williams) Tarvin.
He was a member of Faith Assembly in Scottsburg, IN.
Survivors include:
Wife:  Linda (Griffin) Deen of Deputy, Ind.
Daughters: Shelley Brown of Deputy, Ind., Shawna Spence of Brownstown, Ind.
Sons: A.J. Deen of Paris Crossing, Ind., Troy Deen of Deputy, Ind., Mark Deen of Deputy, Ind..
Step Sons: Robert Griffin of Madison, Ind.
Brother:  Ferris Deen of Eugene, Ore.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral Service was held  at 12 noon on Saturday, March 1, at Buchanan Funeral Home, Austin, Ind., with Rev. James Fugate officiating.
Visitation was Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday after 9 a.m. at Buchanan Funeral Home. Burial was at Pisgah Cemetery in  Deputy, Ind. Buchanan Funeral Home , 115 North Second Street, Austin, Indiana 47102.


Cheryl Gover-Croy
(Aug. 1943-Jan. 31, 2008)

Cheryl Gover-Croy, 64, went home to be with her savior, Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father on Jan. 31, 2008, with her son and family by her side.
Cheryl was born Aug. 1943 in Baker. She attended schools in Richland, Ore. She graduated from Eagle Valley High School in 1961 and attended Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
She was in 4-H sewing and cooking clubs during her youth, and played volleyball in high school. She married John Croy in 1967. Cheryl worked at the Forest Service in Lakeview and Baker, and at Pioneer Federal Bank in Baker.
She moved to the Portland area  and worked for Cascadia Medical until she retired in 2005. After retiring, she moved to Bend where she spent her last days battling an illness. She was always a mild-mannered person willing to help others.
She loved chrocheting doilies and afghans for relaxation. She had an incredible gift of always seeing the best in everyone. She will always be remembered as a strong woman who overcame many trials in her life and never lost sight of the big picture. She is already greatly missed and always  will be.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford Gover, and her husband, John Croy.
Cheryl is survived by her son, John and his wife Maria Croy of Bend, Ore.; daughters Terrina and husband Tom Potter of Montague, Calif., and Norlene and husband Migel Sanchez or Bend, Ore.; mother, Delora Gover of Baker City; brother Gary and wife Yvonne Gover of Salem, Ore.; sister Janice and husband Adam Brooks of Baker City; grandchildren Tyler, Coleton, BJ, Shelby, Alex, John Jr., Cassandra and Rebecca; and her nieces and nephew.
There will be a service in her memory at the Harvest Church in Baker City on March 14 at 2 p.m. There will be a family service at the cemetery after.

 
Norman Letchworth
(July 16, 1916-March 2, 2008)

Norman Edgar Letchworth, 91, left us here on earth to be with his six brothers and sisters, his wife Rosalind, companion Helen Young and his son Edward, Sunday morning, March 2, 2008, at his home in Halfway, Ore.
A Memorial Service – Celebration of Norman’s Life will be held on Monday, March 10, 2008, 1 p.m. at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church in Halfway, Ore.  Friends are invited to join the family for a reception immediately following the service at the Presbyterian Church.
Norman was born on July 16, 1916, in Wilcox, Ariz., to Thompson and Mary Ann (Squire) Letchworth.  He achieved many things in his life, such as being a dedicated father, husband and grandfather.  He was a very honest and trusting friend. Norman worked for 40 years retiring as a conductor/engineer for Union Pacific Railroad.
Norman moved to Halfway several years ago to live with his grandson Norm and wife Michelle Letchworth’s home. Norman enjoyed being with his family very much. On his 91st birthday, he enjoyed his “last train ride” on the Sumpter Railroad.
He will be missed by many, including his friends in Boulder City, Nev., where he spent most of his life.
Norman is survived by his step-daughter Valerie and husband Bob of Albuerquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren Lissa Raftis of Spokane, Wash., and Norman and Michelle Letchworth of Halfway, Ore.; seven great- grandchildren, Rochelle, Laura, Corey, Amanda, Danielle, Joshua and Kimberley; four great-great grandchildren, Lily Anne, Nickolas, Annalynn and Easton Eugene whom he adored dearly; and great-niece and caregiver Jennifer Whybark.
A private interment will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., and he will be interred with his beloved wife Rosalind. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution in memory of Norman may do so to Pathway Hospice through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.


Marjorie McAllister
(Oct. 16, 1921-Feb. 24, 2008)

Marjorie Mae McAllister of 120 Elzora Apt. 20, Milton-Freewater, Oregon passed away Feb. 24, 2008, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., at the age of 86 years.
A Celebration of her Life was held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall in Milton-Freewater, Ore. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Society or a charity of choice in care of Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.  
Marjorie McAllister was born on Oct. 16,1921 to LeRoy Albert and Lela (Cross) Speelman in Haines, Ore. She graduated from Baker High School in 1940. In 1941 she married John Stell in Weiser, Idaho. He preceded her in death in 1964.
Marjorie worked in restaurants in North Powder and Baker City and owned Virgils Drive Inn in Baker City for several years.  She was well known for her pies.  Marjorie moved to Milton-Freewater in 1954 and purchased the J & M cafe. She sold the restaurant in 1964 when she married Orville (Red) McAllister. They operated McAllister Orchards and Marjorie became the bookkeeper and sold fruit from the home. Marjorie belonged to the VFW Auxiliary in Milton-Freewater and cooked many lunches for the Rotary when it was the Auxilliary's turn in the kitchen. She also belonged to the Washington Horticultural Society.  Marjorie received the Woman of the Year Award from the Horticultural Society in 2000. Her sister, Cora Lois moved in with her in 1991 and they loved going to Bingo together and playing their daily Yahtzee games. Marjorie loved her home, family, her flowers and her dog Juniper who was her companion for 14 years.
She is survived by stepson, Don McAllister of La Grande, Ore.; stepdaughter Ginger Steele of Portland, Ore.; three granddaughters and several nephews and nieces including Patricia Chappell and Claudia Allen, both of Milton-Freewater, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a brother, Claude Speelman and sisters, Jewell Wright and Cora Lois Moberly.


Ruth Hazel Parlin
(Aug. 27, 1930-Feb.29, 2008)
Ruth Hazel Parlin, 77, of Baker City passed away Feb. 29, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. Her cremated remains will be interred and placed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City at a later date. At the families request there will be no funeral service. There will be a private family memorial at 9:30 a.m. with a reception to follow for friends and family at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center on March 4, at 10 a.m. Gray’s West and Co. will be handling the arrangements.
Ruth was born to Effie and Ben Williams on Aug. 27, 1930, in LaPorte, Ind. She grew up on a farm in Walkerton, Ind., and graduated from Walkerton High School. Ruth attended business school and worked for a savings and loan bank in South Bend, Ind.
When Ruth was a small child at the age of 6 she contracted Scarlet Fever. Unfortunately, the fever left Ruth with a severe hearing impairment. In later years, Ruth told her children she remembered not being able to hear her teachers and too shy to ask for help, she was basically self taught.
Ruth met Thomas C. Parlin and was married on New Years Day, 1951, while her husband was on leave from the Marine Corps. She relocated to the military base in Quantico, Va., and after a time her husband was shipped out for the Korean War.
Years later, Ruth and her family moved to Baker City. Ruth was then devoted to raising her three children. Ruth was a skilled seamstress and made her daughters’ clothing. She was also a wonderful cook and an excellent baker. Her children and grandchildren loved her pies and cream puffs. Ruth also did beautiful embroidering and love of flowers was incorporated into her needlework.
She was a big supporter of her children and grandchildren’s activities. She loved going to her son’s baseball games when he was growing up, and later attended her grandchildren’s school sporting events and 4-H activities. She never missed watching her grandchildren show their animals at fair.
Ruth came from a very patriotic family having several members serving in the military. Her father Ben , US Army, WWI; brother Raymond, US Army, WW II; brother Grover Williams, US Marines, Korean War MIA; husband Tom C. Parlin, US Marines, Korean War; brother Ben Williams, US Army, Vietnam; son- in-law David Comstock, US Army, Vietnam; son-in-law Rick Holden, US Army; son Tom S. Parlin, US Marines, Vietnam era and Cold War; grandson Glen Comstock, US Navy, and grandson Tom K. Parlin, named after her husband and son, having just returned from the Iraq war and 3rd generation  US Marine. This made her smile.
Ruth loved to read and would check out many books from the library. Later on in life Ruth checked out a book on calligraphy and taught herself that style of writing. She had the patience to practice and as a result did beautiful calligraphy. Ruth was a very caring and gentle person.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Parlin of Baker City; sister Peggy Bope of Hamlet, Indiana; daughter Jennifer Holden and her husband Rick of Baker City; daughter Pamela Comstock and husband Dave of La Grande; son Thomas Parlin and his wife Julie of Redmond; grandchildren David G. Comstock of Pendleton; Shane Holden of Baker City; Casey Holden and wife Kristin of Redmond; Thomas K. Parlin of Redmond; Stephanie Parlin of Ontario; great-grandson Seth Holden; sisters-in-law Mary Jane Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ellen Town of Vale; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Effie Williams, sisters Helen Harness and Adeline Himes, brothers Ben Williams, Raymond Williams and Grover Williams.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Pathway Hospice, or a charity of one’s choice.

 
Craig Robinson
(Dec. 29, 1966-Feb. 28, 2008)

Craig Wallace Robinson passed away Feb. 28, 2008, at his home in Baker City.
A memorial service was held Monday, March 3, 2008, at the home of Allen and Vickie Stevenson.
Craig was born Dec. 29, 1966, in Colfax, Wash., to his parents James Lee Robinson and Vicky Lee Stevenson. He was raised in Bend, Ore., where he attended school graduating from Bend Senior High School. He spent summers and vacations in Milton Freewater, OR. He lived in Salem, Ore., for a short time and moved to Baker City in 1993.
During his life, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was happiest when he was camping, fishing, hunting and just being outdoors. He loved watching all of his nieces and nephews grow up. He attended all of their various school and sports activities. Craig was always there when his family needed him. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Craig loved helping people and would always be there to help when the Baker City Loins needed it.
Survivors include his mother, Vickie Stevenson, and father, Allen D. Stevenson, of Baker City; stepmother, Jennifer Robinson of Milton Freewater; grandparents, Dean and Phyllis Stevenson of Bend; sister, Kim Nelson and husband Pete of Baker City; sister Kerri Carpenter and husband Chanc of Baker City; sister, Kristi Morris of Walla Walla, Wash.; and brother Eric Robinson of Milton Freewater. He left five nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandmother, grandfather, nephew and uncle.

Hazel Toney
(April 14, 1910-Feb. 25, 2008)

Hazel Laura Williams Toney, 97, of Baker City, and formerly of Haines and Muddy Creek died Feb. 25, 2008, at the St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.
Her graveside funeral was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Haines Cemetery. Visitations was  Monday from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.
Hazel was the sixth child of seven born on April 14, 1910, at Muddy Creek to Harry Chatterton and Ida Belle Davis Williams where she grew up on her family’s ranch. She married Claude Biswell Toney on Sept. 23, 1928. Hazel and Claude celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1978.
Hazel lived at Haines and worked for the Haines Telephone Co., for Walter Heard, H.O. Wiswell and for Vance and Margaret Dix. She also worked at the Circle H Cafe for several owners. She is the descendant of two early pioneer families of North Powder: her grandparents, Lemuel and Amanda Ellen Steward Williams, and John Samuel and Susan Dealy Davis. Hazel’s parents were Harry Chatterton and Ida Belle Davis Williams.
Survivors include her three children; Larry L. Toney and his wife, Colleen, of Elgin; Rodney B. Toney and his wife, Marjorie; and Claudia Gilkison and her husband, Robert, all of Haines; five granddaughters, Teresa Olson and her husband, Don, Sheree Evans and her husband, Kyle, Valerie Harris and her husband, Shane, Linda Evans and her husband, Mike, and Debbie VanKlinken and her husband, Steve; three grandsons, David Toney and his wife, Paula, Jeff Toney and his wife, Carolyn, and Edward Toney and his wife, Gail; 27 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ella Williams; and nieces, DeEtte Seaworth, Diane Wilson and Maryann Green.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; and brothers and sisters, Lena May Cavin and her husband, William, Elmer Harry Williams, Maude Susan Neilson and her husband, Neil, Dora Lethlean and her husband, Arthur and Edward Samuel Williams and Russell Williams and his wife, Maxine.

Harley Ose VanHise

Harley Ose VanHise passed away Feb. 21, 2008. Born March 19, 1919, in St. Maries, Idaho, to Harrison and Nellis (Elliot) VanHise, he resided most recently in Bend, Ore.
Harley received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore. and a Master’s Degree from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. He served in the Navy during World War II.
Harley worked as a teacher and administrator in public middle schools in Redmond and Burns, Ore., and Meridian, Idaho, where he retired. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, reading and playing Bridge.
His survivors include his wife, Anita; his son, Charles and his wife Joanne of Burns; his son David of Burns; stepson, Robert Johnson of Springfield; and stepson, Larry Johnson of Vancouver, Wash.
He is preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Memorial contributions can be directed to Central Oregon Home Health and Hospice or the Central Oregon Human Society.
