Richard Lee Hamman
(May 30, 1940 - July 26, 2008)

Richard Lee Hamman, 68, of Baker City, died July 17, 2008, at Settlers Park in Baker City.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2008, at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the church following the service.
Richard was born May 30, 1940, to Roy and Fern Hamman at Fort Archambault in French Equatorial Africa, during their time as missionaries.
Roy served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1963. He worked as a Hydroelectric Engineer most of his life, retiring in 2000.
Richard Lee Hamman is survived by his children Robert Hamman of Baker City and ReNeé Mitchell of Longview, Texas; brothers Don Hamman of Oceanside, Calif., Dave Hamman of Flint, Mich. and Chuck Divine of Coto De Caza, Calif.; grandchildren Jessica, Mark and Angi.
He was preceded in death by his father Roy Hamman, mother Fern Hamman and stepmother Mary Hamman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in care of Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave, Baker City, OR 97814.

  
Aletta Fae Shurtz
(Sept. 1, 1923 - June 10, 2008)

Aletta Fae Dunn Shurtz, 84, of Albany, Ore., a former Baker County resident, died June 10, 2008 at Albany.
A memorial service will be scheduled later at Baker City.
Fae was born Sept. 1, 1923, at Haines to Roy and Clara Walling Dunn. She spent her early childhood at Sparta and attended Baker schools.
During World War ll she worked at the Kaiser Shipyard at Portland, Ore. She also worked as a waitress, a bartender and as a beautician and instructor.
She married Ab Shurtz and they lived several years in Yuma, Ariz. After Ab died she moved to Albany to be closer to her daughter.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Dick Trible of Albany; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Dottie Birchmier of Post Falls, Idaho, Gary and Mickie Brown of Cordova, Tenn., Dan and Sandy Brown of La Grande and Mike and Debbie Kelly of Meridian, Idaho. Brothers and sisters-in-law Carl Dunn of Arco, Idaho; Delaine and Bonnie Dunn of Union; sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Mike Donovan of Sutherlin; Glenda and Mike Purvine of Baker City; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ab; two brothers,  three sisters and one granddaughter Kimberly Dawn.


Franklyn Williams
(July 1, 1038-July 10, 2008)

Franklyn Spence Williams, 70, a former Baker resident, died July 10, 2008, at Providence Medical Center in Portland, Ore.
A service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Omega Funeral & Cremation Service in Portland.
Franklyn was born July 1, 1938, in Baker, to Jay and Marjorie Williams.  He graduated from high school in Baker. He worked during his early years in Baker, and in 1959 moved to Portland where he worked for  Johnston Bros. contract carriers providing services at the Oregon Journal, which later sold to The Oregonian. In 1968 he bought the Husky Service Station on 10th St. in Baker City and owned it until 1972. He returned to Portland where he once again worked for The Oregonian. In 1983 he purchased the Powellhurst Tavern in Portland, which he owned until June 2007.
He married Mary Snethen on Dec. 31, 1959 in Weiser, Idaho.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; son, Jay Williams and his wife Carol and son Aaron of Winston, Ore.; daughter, Jennifer Benallaland and her husband Mohammed and their son Travis Caven; sister, Karey Craig and her husband Charles of Portland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Grace and Harry Spence all of Baker.
Remembrances can be made to the  charity of one’s choice.


Robert L. Young
(May 2, 1926  - July 22, 2008)

Robert L. "Bob" Young, 82, retired Baker City Fire Chief, died July 16, 2008, at his home. Funeral services for Bob were at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Mel Harris  officiated. Vault interment  followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Bob was born May 2, 1926, in Union County to Oliver P. and Vivian (Brooks) Young. He was raised in various towns in eastern Oregon receiving his education in Wallowa, Bates, Lockhart, Rock Creek and Haines. He moved to Baker City from Bates, Ore., in 1938 and has lived here since.
Bob went to work for Baker City on April 15, 1945, at the age of 18 as a fireman for Baker City Fire Department. On June 6, 1948, he married Beverly J. Carnes at the First Lutheran Church. To this marriage, they had a son, Robert W. Young. He worked his way through the ranks and became Fire Chief on May 1, 1971. He retired at the age of 55 on Dec. 31, 1981. During his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and telling stories of the old days. He was a great friend of Leo Adler and had many wonderful stories to share about him.
Bob continued to serve the City as a member of the council from 1987 to 1995 and was a member of the budget board. He was also a member of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association, and served as president. He was also a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Baker City Elks Lodge.
Bob is survived by his wife Beverly, Baker City, Ore. Son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Joette Young, Pendleton, Ore.; grandsons, Michael A. Young, Pendleton, Ore., and Stephen J. Young, Corvallis, Ore.; sister-in-law, Pat Young of Gresham, Ore., and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James O. Young.
Memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be directed to First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Baker City Fire Department. This may be done through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.
