(Jan. 5, 1951 - Aug. 3, 2008)

Dr. Steven (Steve) D. Adams of Baker City, Ore., passed away Aug. 3, 2008, after an extended battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 5, 1951, in Eugene to Al and Ruth Adams. He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1969 and attended Eastern Oregon College and Oregon State University where he received his degree in microbiology in 1974. This was followed by attending the School of Dentistry at Oregon Health Sciences Center in Portland where he earned his DMD degree in 1978.
Following graduation he established the Adams Family Dental Clinic in Baker City, which he operated for 30 years until April 1 of this year.
Adams is survived by five children: Lori and Jenna of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Jake of Eugene; Chad and Haley of Baker City. Also surviving are his parents in Springfield; his sister, Nancy, of Beaverton and her children Jay, Jeff and Nichelle.
Adams was a life-long, avid hunter and enjoyed the challenges of the roughest terrains in North America. His avocation was raising purebred Angus cattle at his Baker City ranch.
He was a member of the Baker City Nazarene Church as well as several professional organizations.
A memorial service will be held at the church on Friday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.


Jessie Luster-McCabe
(Sept. 17, 1918 - July 26, 2008)

Jessie Luster-McCabe, 89, died July 26, 2008.
There will be a private family celebration of her life on Aug. 9. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Casey Eye Institute in Portland through Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801.
Jessie was born on Sept. 17, 1918, to Elmer and Hill Hightower at Prague, Okla. She married Gilbert Luster in 1937 while he was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla. Jessie and Gilbert raised seven children, living in Cascade and Boise, Idaho. They moved to Baker City where Gilbert operated a logging truck operation and Jessie pulled green chain at the Oregon Lumber Mill Co.
Later Jessie operated the Third and Dewey Market in Baker City for six years.
In 1959, Jessie moved her family to Pendleton where she worked at Gunther’s Restaurant, Cimmiyotti’s, and the Elks Club (along with other businesses) and made many friends.
Jessie married John McCabe in 1971. Rounding out her retirement “Grandma Jessie” was a foster grandparent with Beth Fry at Hawthorne Elementary School in Pendleton.
Jessie will be fondly remembered for her sense of humor and her willingness to love and support her family.
“She was just in her ways, industrious and always fair,” family members said. “She loved her children more than anything — always putting them first. We love you Grandma Jessie.”
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Gilbert Luster, who died in 1953, and John McCabe, who died in 1988; her son, Wes Luster, who died in 2003; her brother, Ray Hightower; and her parents, Elmer and Hill Hightower.
Survivors include her children, Philena Thompson of Boise, Sue Shelton of Baker City, Bev Crawford of Pendleton, Rosie Summers of Springfield, Jim Luster of Spokane, Wash., and Bonnie O’Hara of Boise; her sister, Wilma Moos of Florida; her brother, Ralph Hightower of Oklahoma; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Burns Mortuary of Pendleton handled the arrangements.


Hilda Ellen Overton
(May 10, 1925 - July 30, 2008)

Hilda Ellen Overton, 83, of Baker City died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Services. At her request, no public services will be held.  
Hilda was born May 10, 1925, in Washburn, N.D. to Andrew and Louise (Pfiefle) Schacher, who had immigrated from Germany. She was the third child of 10. She attended school in Washburn and lived on a farm while young.  When they moved to town, she got polio. She had it three times and wasn’t able to talk until the age of 9. At the age of 13, she was put into braces due to the polio. She graduated from Washburn High School.
She went to work as a cook at the age of 16 and excelled at it.  She married Stan Nelson and had son Rick. While carrying him, she got polio again. This marriage ended in divorce. She married Larry Cable and had 3 children from this marriage, Ernie, Beulah and Marty. They later divorced.  She then married Bill Overton.  They moved to Baker City in the 1960’s. This marriage also ended in divorce.
Hilda was an excellent cook and did cooking and housekeeping for others all of her life. Her last occupation before retirement was being a housekeeper at the Royal Motor Inn, cleaning and doing laundry for 15 units a day. She also worked for a time for Ken Grabner while his wife was ill.
She is survived by her children, Rick Nelson and his wife Shelly of Vancouver, Wash.; Ernie Cable, also of Vancouver; Beulah and Mike Rust of Burns, Ore.; and Marty Sharpneck of Covington, La. Grandchildren, Troy and Toby Holland of Burns, Ore.; Arthur Cable and Sonya Cable of Vancouver, Wash.; five great grandchildren also survive.  Brothers, Wayne Schacher and his wife Norma of Manden, N.D.; David Schacher and his wife Judy of Bismark N.D., sister Irene Helm and her husband Effren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Walter, Richard, Ernest, Arthur, sisters Ruthy and Leona.

 Roger L. Sears
(July 28, 1928 - July 13, 2008)

Roger Leigh Sears, 79 of Boise, Idaho, and a former Baker City resident died July 13, 2008, at the Veterans Hospital in Boise.
Memorial services were held July 23, 2008, at the Idaho Veterans Home in Boise. Burial was at Idaho Veterans Cemetery in Boise.
Mr. Sears graduated from Baker High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Navy in 1947. He worked and lived mostly in the Treasure Valley until moving into the Idaho Veterans Home in 1999.
Mr. Sears is survived by his son Leo, Seattle, Wash., and his daughter Erleen, Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
