Polly Ann Avery
(Sept. 5, 1965 - Sept. 12, 2008)

Polly Ann Avery, 43, of Baker City passed away after fighting a long hard battle with ovarian cancer on Sept. 12, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Services with her family at her side.
Her funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel.  Riders on horseback following the horse drawn hearse lead the procession to Mt. Hope Cemetery for vault interment. Friends were invited to join the family for a potluck picnic at the Geiser Pollman Park following the service.
Polly Ann was born Sept. 5, 1965, in Portland, Ore., to Jesse Alvin and Helen Georgia (Crawford) Avery.
She enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, drives in the mountains, four-wheeling, eating (she never could pass a restaurant,) and time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father Jesse Avery; bothers:  John Henry Avery and Donald Eugene Haynes; 2 nephews and 1 niece.
Polly is survived by her life long partner Fidel Soliz of Baker City; children Jesse and Stephanie Soliz both of Baker City; mother Helen Buckmaster of Baker City; siblings Sandy Furtado and her husband Larry of Nyssa, Ore.; Dianna Haynes and her husband Paul of Blaine, M.N., Harold Haynes and his wife Theresa of Rupert, Idaho, Celia Guilliams and her husband Timothy of Baker City, and Kathy Hoffman and her husband Lewis of Baker City; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions can be made to Relay for Life, Baker Chapter or The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund in care of Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, Ore.  97814.

Vivian Gover
(Sept. 26, 1919 - Sept. 9, 2008)

Vivian Gover, formerly of Baker City, died Sept. 9, 2008, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash., with her family by her side.
Recitation of the Rosary was held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Gray’s West & Co Pioneer Chapel in Baker City. A Funeral Mass was held 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral with Father Julian Casssar officiating. Interment  followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Gover was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Ontario, Ore., to Alexander James Castles and Anna Pauley Castles. Her family moved to New Plymouth, Idaho where she lived and graduated from the New Plymouth schools in 1938.
On July 22, 1941, she married Harvey D. Criss in New Plymouth, Idaho and they began their married life in Baker City, Ore. Harvey preceded her in death in 1965.
Upon moving to Baker City in 1941, Vivian became a member of the St. Francis parish. Her children attended and graduated from St. Francis Academy. During this time she became an active member of the St. Francis Alter Society and established many close friendships.
Vivian was employed by Dr. Jack Burchtorf as a receptionist/dental assistant in 1962. She retired in 1975 and in July of that year, married Walter Gover. He preceded her in death in 1985.
Vivian loved life, her family and friends. She was fond of antiques, especially old dishes. She was particularly proud of her cup and saucer collection. She loved music and would spend free time playing her piano. She will be deeply missed.
Vivian’s survivors include daughter Diane Barlow and son-in-law Scottie of Olympia, Washington; sons David Criss and daughter-in-law Judi of Richardson, Texas, Gary Criss and daughter-in-law Joanne of Hillsboro, Ore., Kent Criss and daughter-in-law Terry of Tigard, Ore., and brother Hugh Castles of Paradise, Calif. Vivian had 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Vivian’s sister Perl Nelson and brothers Paul Castles, Lloyd Castles and Leo Castles preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Cathedral Renovation Fund or to a charity of one’s choice in care of Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave, Baker City, OR 97814.
