 Walden Discusses Economic Bailout

By Debby Schoeningh

US Congressman Greg Walden, R-Hood River, said, after voting in favor of the $700 government bailout he received more than 2,000 angry phone calls.

"You elect us to lead not follow, to evaluate situations and not just stick a finger in our ear and do what's popular at the moment, to try and do what's best for the country in the long run," said Walden. "It's the last thing I ever wanted to do, but I thought the alternative was worse — something had to be done. I made what was not a very popular vote."

Walden stopped in Baker City Monday while on the campaign trail through eastern Oregon. He said this was his fourth visit  to Baker County this year and he was traveling  3,600 miles, attending over 60 meetings and public events around the Second Congressional District. He toured Ash Grove Cement plant and met with the local Farm Bureau earlier in the day, and attended an evening reception at the Geiser Grand Hotel before heading to La Grande.

BHS Crowns 2008 King And Queen
At Pep Night

By Eden Taylor
Pep Night yells filled the air as the classes banned together in a night filled with fun, fancy and frenzy.

In a regal fashion, the Homecoming Court was presented to the crowd.  Grace Fast and Bryan Mayer hosted the event. Girls dressed in beautiful formals and boys in lettermen jackets; each of the couples took their walk down the “purple carpet,” and onto their “thrones.” The flower girl, Hailey Hodel, daughter of Bob and Lori Hodel, and the crown bearer, Taylor Folkman, son of Chris and Carrie Folkman, received ooos and ahhhs as they paraded down the runway. Mary Collard was all smiles as she was introduced to crown the king. Mary dedicated her smile to Mayce, whose presence was once again missed by her classmates.  Hayden Perkins was congratulated as king by Collard and then escorted Tara Talbott front as center as the queen.
