LaVina Balch (May 2, 1924 - Nov. 12, 2008)
LaVina Mae Balch, 85, of Baker City passed away Nov. 12, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Care Center after a long bout with emphysema, comforted by her dear niece Dee Swanson of Baker City. Gathering was held at Spokane Memorial Gardens (Spokane Wash.), on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. and reception to follow at Timber Creek Buffet (9211 E Montgomery Ave, Spokane, Wash.) LaVina Mae was born May 2, 1924 in Baker City, Ore., to her parents Mr. and Mrs. Shields. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda E. Balch (Pendleton, Ore.), son, Gene W. Balch (Lana) (Spokane, Wash.), two grand-daughters, Whisper Dempsey (Chris) (Delaware Water Gap, PA.), Wendy Chapman (Travis) (Post Falls, Idaho), and six great grand-daughters, Gabrielle, Catherine, Chloe‚, Sophia, Bryn and Brooke, and many in-laws and friends. Marion LeRoy Carey (Dec. 8, 2008 - Nov. 5, 2008)
Marion LeRoy Carey Marion LeRoy Carey, age 79, passed away Nov. 5, 2008. Marion was a resident at the Idaho State Veterans Care Center in Boise, Idaho, but lived with his son a short time in Baker City before entering the home. He was the fifth of six children, born on Dec. 8, 1928, to Benjiman Franklin and Emma Margaret (Brahms) Carey in Keeline, Niobrara County, Wyo. Marion began his education in Manville, Wyo. and graduated from Nampa, Idaho, High School in 1946. After high school, he worked for Warehouser Industries in Everett, Washington for a short time. He returned to Idaho in 1948 and worked as a fuel-truck driver in Stibnite, Idaho. In 1948, he came to Grangeville, where he operated a "skidder" in the woods for Hickey Brothers Logging. His life-long career began in 1949 and in August 1950, he graduated from Idaho State Barber College in Boise. He married Marian ("Marty") Price on Nov. 4, 1950, in Grangeville. They raised the family together and were later divorced in 1992. In January 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy as he answered to the call to serve his country. His four years were served on the "Destroyer U.S.S. Gurke" as a barber. After his honorable discharge in December of 1954, the family returned to Grangeville where he purchased partnership into Don's Barber Shop. Later, Jim Ries, who came from Boise, became his partner. Marion remained as a barber until his health failed and began his retirement in 1999. He spent many hours daily, observing the town's interests in his main street location. Marion enjoyed music and began playing the "guitar and fiddle" at an early age. He earned a first place at a Wyoming fiddler's contest at age 10. He enjoyed the guitar and singing most of all, along with his family. Marion had an avid interest in and watched sports. He forever shared the sports statistics with many of his customers at the barber shop and beyond. He enjoyed stream fishing and the family campouts. He liked to dance, and play pinochle. He was an ardent bowler for 35 years or more, and bowled the leagues weekly and also in the tournament plays. He did like the Grangeville area and wanted so much to return before his death. He had been a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #9, Eagles #539, and the Elks Lodge, all of Grangeville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grangeville, being baptized along with his two sons on Aug. 4, 1963. Marion is survived by one son, Ricky D. Carey Sr. of Baker City, Ore.; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Cody) Morris, Christopher Carey and Ricky D. Carey Jr., all of Baker City, Ore., Michael Carey of Muskegon, Mich., Lindsey Pilot of Gresham, Ore., Leslie Carey of Portland, Ore., and Christine Carey of Baltimore, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Blake Morris; one brother, B. Frank (Dorothy) Carey of Pahrump, Nev.; one sister, Evelyn (Joe) Bulson of Boise, Ida.; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a foster daughter, Becky Trainer of Grangeville; and one son-in-law, Walter Pilot of Gresham, Ore. Besides his parents, Marion was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, a daughter, Carol in 1998, and a son, Craig in 2008 Friends visited with the family from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at Relyea Funeral Chapel. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. at Kohlerlawn Cemetery, Nampa. Pastor Dan Martin of McEwen Church in Sumpter officiated.
Clarence Knee (March 13, 1926 - Nov. 16, 2008)
Clarence Knee, 82, of Nampa, died at the home of his daughter Judy Schwab on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, following an extended illness. Clarence was born March 13, 1926, the youngest of eight children born to James and Grace Knee in Weiser, Idaho. Clarence was educated in Weiser, Ida. and in 1942 he joined the United States Navy. Clarence served with distinction during WWII. He saw combat in the South Pacific at Saipan, Guadalcanal, Guam, and Okinawa. Following his service during WWII he returned home and entered the Chicago Institute of Art. While there he was trained in Sign and Window Art. On June 8, 1950, he married the love of his life, Eloris Adams in Weiser, Ida. Together they made their home in Weiser and Caldwell, Idaho and finally Baker City. They raised their family and were successful partners in commercial art and sign businesses. They also owned and operated and successful restaurant in Sunnyside, Wash. Following their retirement they sold their business and traveled the United States for nearly 10 years as full time RVers, stopping only due to declining health. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Eloris in 2003. He was the sole survivor of the family of James and Grace Knee and their eight children. During his final years he traveled in his RV Trailer with his cousin, Grace Bend. Clarence is survived by his daughter Judy Schwab and her husband Roger of Nampa, Idaho; a son Mike Knee of Baker City, Ore.; his grandchildren Duane and Stephanie Huffman and Carmen and Jeff Underwood; his great-grand children, Kylie and Brooke Huffman and TJ and Jenika Underwood of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Keith Adams and family of Ontario, Ore., brother-in-law Gary Adams and family of Payette, Idaho, and brother-in-law Dennis and Collette Adams and family of Boise, Idaho. His family requests memorials be made to Life’s Doors Hospice, 420 S. Orchard, Boise, Idaho 83705; the Ronald McDonald House of Boise, 101 Warm Springs Ave., Boise, Idaho 83712, or a charity of your choice. Chaplain Jon Martin of Life’s Doors Hospice will officiate at a memorial service to be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. A graveside inurnment with military honors will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser, Idaho, on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m.
William F. Mann (April, 25, 1913 - Nov. 10, 2008)
William F. Mann, 95 of Pasco, Wash., died on Nov. 10, 2008. He was born on April 25, 1913, in Baker, Ore., to Edward and Stella Mann. William was married to Opal Graven (mother of his children) and Josie Mann. William served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945. He lived in Pasco, Wash., for 51 years. He worked as a Truck Driver and Rancher, he retired in 1975. William’s hobbies were fishing, high mountain camping and raising cattle. William is survived by his son Clayton (Roberta) Mann, daughter Billie MacNaughton, sister-in-law Millie. Six grandchildren; Terri, Deb, Ron, Dana, Bernice and Clayton. Several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Two step-children – Roberta “Birdie” (Jack) Daniels and Bill Stultz. Several step-grandchildren and step-great and great great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Opal, second wife Josie, two sisters and two brothers. ‘Nell’ Owen (May 20, 1924 - Nov. 9, 2008)
Nellie Mae (Colton) Owen, 84, a longtime resident of Baker City, Ore., passed away Nov. 9, 2008, at Boise Samaritan Village in Boise, Idaho. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Avenue, Baker City, Ore. A concluding inurnment service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery. Sister Kay Marie Duncan will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family after the committal service at the Elk’s Lodge, 1896 2nd St., in Baker City. Nell was born May 20, 1924, at the Keating Ranch to John and Nora Gilkison Colton, the 8th child of 15 children. She attended grade school at the Washington School above the Colton ranch and graduated from Baker City High School. Beloved by many, a warm, fun loving, no-nonsense, straight talking woman, Nell loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and especially camping throughout the summer months in the Eagle Mountains and for a few years tended the Tamarack campground at East Eagle for the Forest Service. A hard worker, provider, and business woman, she owned the Idle Hour Tavern, Baker City, Ore., in the late 1950s and a small grocery store/cafe in Union, Ore. during the mid 1970s. She worked in many retail establishments in Pendleton, La Grande, and Baker City, Ore. She instilled a proper work ethic to many young local teens who she hired for odd jobs. She was affiliated with the Elks and Veteran organizations. Survivors include 2 sons, Gregg Patrick Flint of Baker City, Ore. and Timothy John Flint with his partner Frederick C. Kirkbride of San Francisco, Calif., 9 grandchildren, Michael Rue Ellis and spouse Tara, Randal Wade Ellis and spouse Julie, Suzanne Noel Poole and spouse Russell all of Bellingham, Wash., and Jarrod Preston Ellis of Pendleton, Ore. James Patrick Flint, Brandon Michael Flint, Joshua Jon Flint, Chandra Jade Davis, Caleb Colton Flint, living throughout Eastern Oregon and 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Colton and his wife Ann of Baker City; Ore., five sisters, June Premovich and her husband George of Wenatchee, Wash., Jean Thompson and her husband Elmer of Mt. Mia Marie Roe (Aug. 25, 2008 - Nov. 7, 2008)
Mia Marie Roe, 2 months, of Haines passed away Nov. 7, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho, as her mother held her in her loving arms. A funeral service was held on Friday, Nov. 14, at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. A private family only interment will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pastor Ray Hedlund of Calvary Chapel will officiate. Mia was born Aug. 25, 2008, in Baker City to Gerald Dewayne, III and Alicia Diane (Teeter) Roe. She lived with her parents in Haines and was a very happy baby. Mia loved to talk. Her mother would bounce her on her knee while watching movies and Mia would talk to her during the whole show. She was just getting the “fake cry” act down and would use it while her mom was getting ready in the morning. Mia would start by talking and when that didn’t get mom to hurry up she went into the sad face, whimper, wait for a response, and repeat. Mia was very curious and enjoyed seeing new things. She was a mama’s girl and they loved being together. Mia is survived by her parents Alicia and Gerald of Haines and grandparents, John and Karen DeShiro of Medical Springs, Carrie Carpenter of Middleton, Ida., and Gerald Dewayne Roe, II of John Day.
