Mary Christina Gover (July 10, 1916 - Nov. 9, 2008)
Mary Christina “Christine” Gover, 92, a long time Pine Valley resident, died Nov. 9, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, in Baker City, Ore. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Nov. 29, 2008, at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church in Halfway, Ore., concluding inurnment service will be at the Pine Valley Cemetery. Both will be officiated by Pastor Bill Shields. Friends are invited to join the family for a potluck reception afterwards at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Annex. Christine was born on July 10, 1916, in Ontario, Ore. to Tot J. (T.J.) Crook and Rebecca Elizabeth Arthur Crook. She was the third of three siblings, Lynn Crook and Helen Crook Atkinson. She attended Pine Valley Union High School in Halfway, graduating in 1934. She then married Roger Milton Gover on June 12, 1938, in a small ceremony in Baker City. She moved with husband to various towns while he was employed by Union Pacific Rail road. They had three children together, Roger Danny Gover of Halfway, Deania Lynn Corrigan of Halfway and Becky Ann Hansen of Baker City. Together Roger and Christine built their home in the upper end of Pine Valley and raised their children. Christine never had to work outside the home and prided herself by raising her three children, and having an open door to all of their friends and more. Any friend of her children became a part of the family, some even calling her “mom” (even now). Her family, even as they grew up and began raising their own families would always end up back at the ranch in Pine Valley, having a wonderful time just being together. This included the cousins and extended families too. She would never turn away someone in need and provided many meals to those who were down on their luck. Christine really had no enemies. She wasn’t a member of any one organization, but volunteered her time to help others. She was a room mother for each of her children in school and she instilled the importance of education to each of them. She was involved in 4-H and FFA through the years. She had a love for horses and volunteered her time with the Pine Valley Fair Board and the Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo. All her children were avid horsemen and women, and she provided her time helping with the Silver Saddle Riding Club and Pine Valley Drill Team. She worked along side of Berdina Whitley for many years. Her two daughters barrel raced and participated in local rodeo events, and along side them, and their friends you would find Christine making sure the cinches were tight and they all did their best. She enjoyed people and helping them do their best. Christine taught Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church, having a strong faith in her God. She passed this strength of faith to everyone that was around her, not in preaching, but in doing. She was a foster parent for a time, helping those children find some other way than being in some kind of trouble. Christine loved the outdoors. She could shoot a gun and put a worm on a hook to fish. She loved camping and being outside. She prided herself in her gardening skills and her ability to grow flowers. Her favorite flower was the iris, in which she had over 25 different colors surround the ranch house. Each year she would work in a huge garden and in the fall, would can the produce to eat all winter. And she taught a simple respect for the outdoors, to take care of what surrounds you and it will take care of you. In later years, Christine’s health failing, she moved to St. Elizabeth Health Care Center where she continued to make friends and become apart of that community. Her favorite activity was playing bingo each day. She was able to help others adjust and become an active part of the activities there. She was always supportive and encouraging to others, including those who took care of her. Survivors include her three children, Roger Danny Gover and his long time friend, Betty Cook, living in Halfway, Deania Lynn Corrigan and her husband James, also of Halfway, Becky Ann Hansen and her husband Dee residing in Baker City. Five Grandchildren, Lonny Dean Gover and his wife Charlotte of Anchorage Alaska, Marty Lynn Gover and his friend Dawn Carlyle of Bothell, Wash., Tod Allen Corrigan and his wife Linda of Yelm, Wash., Cody Lynn Hansen and his wife Michelle of Pendleton Ore., and Jenna Kay-Marie Hansen and Ricardo Asla of Baker City, Ore. Seven Great grandchildren, Scotty, Kimberly, Sean and Timmy Gover, Michael and Carrisa Corrigan, and Ryan Hansen. A niece Debra Kay Burgees and her husband Larry of Willsonville, Oregon and Betty Beith of La Grande, Ore. and a list of cousin with their families.
