Ken McCord (Jan. 20, 1920 - Nov. 2008)
Kenneth Burnett McCord was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Baker, Ore., to Robert and Christina (Thompson) McCord. A celebration of life will be planned in the Spring of 2009. Ken had a heart as huge as he was big and lived his life accordingly. He served his country in the army during World War II as a cook while stationed in Hawaii and was quite the chef. After being discharged, and while visiting family in Seattle, he met Lee Vickers, his "Million Dollar Baby at the 5 and 10 cent Store." They were married in 1954 and for them the honeymoon never ended. Ken loved the Needmore Ranch, raising livestock, haying, gardening and so enjoyed the Lemon Yard. For many years one of his greatest pleasures was playing Santa at the Big V. After many years of ranching Ken and Lee moved to town where they continued to enjoy long rides and just being together. In 2005 he suffered a stroke and spent the remainder of his years receiving great care at St. Elizabeth Care Center. He is loved and he blessed us all. He is survived by his wife Lee, sister Ethel Olson of Seattle, son John and wife Ellen of Union, daughter Janis of Redmond, Wash., granddaughter Kimberley, grandson Ken and wife Jessica and great grandson Tye, and great granddaughter Alyssa of Boise, Idaho. The family requests in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in his name to St. Elizabeth Health Care Center c/o Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, Ore.
