(Died Jan. 16, 2009)

Stan Cartwright a resident of Baker City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.
At his request cremation was held and a family service will be held at a later date.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Monica in 2007 and his father, mother and older brother during WWII.
He lived a long and fruitful life, starting in Hull, Yorkshire, England as a child, joining the British Army as a teenager during WWII and serving in North Africa  and Italy.
He emigrated to New Zealand in 1950 meeting his future wife Monica on the ship during the journey.  They married in 1951 and their daughter Stephanie was born in New Zealand.
The family returned to England in 1961 and then moved to the US in 1965.  Stan’s surviving family includes his sister, Joan Cartwright of California, his daughter Stephanie Werner of Baker City, Ore., her children  Matthew James of Coquille, Ore., Serenity Foersterling, Camden Werner and R’anne Werner of Baker City, Ore., and Stan’s great-grandchildren Justin James, Chaukae James, Taylor Rose Foersterling and Andrew Foersterling along with his grandchildren’s spouses, Hannah James,  and Wade Foersterling.
All who were fortunate enough to know Stan will remember him with love and laughter — his stories of his experiences around the world kept us all in stitches.  His love for his family and his pride in their accomplishments will be remembered all our lives.  Complete strangers fell in love with him instantly as his generosity and humor were contagious.
The final months of his life were spent at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center where he received the best care possible.  His family asks that any donations in his memory maybe made to Heart and Home Hospice or St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, as the staff of both agencies provided compassion and care to Stan and his family during his stay, this maybe done through the Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, Ore.  97814.
 

Regina Ivanich
(Dec. 13, 1922 - Jan. 9, 2009)

 Regina Ivanich, 86, passed away Jan. 9, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Care Center.
Her funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. Pastor Mel Harris of the First Lutheran Church officiated. Following the service friends were invited to gather in the church fellowship hall, 1734  4th St., for a luncheon.
A private interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery will take place at a later date.
Regina was born in Dolnji Slaveci, Slovenia, on Dec. 13, 1922. Her parents were Matija Ivanich & Josefa (Pozvek) Ivanich.  She never married, and is survived by family members living in Croatia and Slovenia.    
Regina moved to Chicago in 1952, and obtained her Certificate of Naturalization in 1959. She took sewing classes and then worked as a Sewing Instructor for 5 years at the YWCA in Chicago. She was a member of the Progressive Slovene Women of America in Chicago. She also attended the New Fashion School of Beauty Culture, graduating in 1973 and worked as a beautician for several years.  She moved to Baker City in the 1980’s and was employed by the Bill Schaan family until 1989.  After she retired she worked as a Senior Companion providing visits to homebound seniors. Regina enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes; she also enjoyed sewing, traveling, and outdoor activities.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Slovenia and a member of the First Lutheran Church of Baker City.
Regina Ivanich is survived by her brother Stefan Ivanich, sister Maria Sabljak and niece Aranka Skledar, all living in Croatia.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Lutheran Church in care of Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave, Baker City, OR  97814.


Keith Mitchell Jeffords
(Dec. 5, 1946 - Jan. 8, 2009)

Keith Mitchell Jeffords departed this life on Jan. 8, 2009.
He was born Dec. 5, 1946, in Baker City, Ore., to Vernon Lawrence and Melba Mitchell Jeffords.
He leaves behind many people who love him dearly, his sweetheart, Myrna Jarvis Jeffords, his children: Timothy, Elaine, Nicol, Wendy (Matt) D’Anna, Brandon (Sue), Jamie (Marilyn), Jeremy (Deceased), Dustin (Amber), Tyson Atkin, Cameron Atkin (Brittany) Bryce Atkin (Chantelle), Austin, Serving in the Seattle, Wash., Mission, and Taylor Atkin, called to serve in the Neuquen, Argentina Mission. Grandchildren: Jenny (Aaron Hammer) Justin, Jaden, Jessica, Ryan, Gabrielle, Olivia, DeAndre, Rocco, Darby, Maximillian, Dashel, Juliet, Domineque, Ireland, Journey, and Dajah. Great Grandchildren: Kadance, his mother, Melba Jeffords, his older brothers and sisters, Wayne (Jacque), Dona Lemmon (Dick), Verna Parker (Don), and Larry (Erin). He will be deeply missed.
Keith is a great man, one who loves his family and his God. He served each to the best of his ability. He tried many things and succeeded at all. One of his greatest accomplishments is the Christ-like example he set for his family. He loves many and is loved by many more.
Funeral serves were held Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Temple View Chapel, 680 N. Eagle View Dr., Alpine.


Cherie Rodriguiz
(June 2, 1968 - Jan. 5, 2009)

Cherie Lynn Sproed Rodriguiz, 40, died Jan. 5, 2009, in Midland, Texas, after an extended illness.
Cherie was born June 2, 1968, in Baker City to Mary and Robert Sproed. She graduated from Baker High School in June 1986.
After high school she attended the University of Idaho and graduated in 1991. She then went on to Wichita State (Kansas) where she earned a master’s degree in physical therapy. Cherie was an outstanding student maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her academic years.
She moved to Midland, Texas, working as a physical therapist, and it was there she met her husband Billy Rodriguiz. She loved her work and being able to help others.
Cherie had a real love for life-she loved the outdoors, camping with her family, and especially enjoyed scuba diving with her dad at Olive Lake. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Rodriguiz, her son, William Thomas Rodriguiz, and three stepchildren, all of Midland, Texas; her parents, Mary and Robert Sproed of Baker City; sister Ann Myer Sproed and her husband Casey, and niece Alea of John Day.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Fred and Katherine Basche, and Tom and Ethel Sproed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Cherie’s name.


John Vogel
(Sept. 13, 1948 - Jan. 11, 2009)

John Vogel, 60, died at his home on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009. A Military Memorial Service was held in John's honor on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, 11 a.m. at the V.F.W. Hall in Halfway, Ore. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception immediately following the service at the V.F.W. Hall.
John Walter was born on Sept. 13, 1948, in Eugene, Ore., to John and Margaret (Ebner) Vogel.  He was raised in the Eugene area, graduating from North Eugene High School in 1966. John was inducted into the U.S. Army, 101st airborne on June 19, 1968, and served in Viet Nam. John was a survivor of Hamburger Hill and was honored with the Bronze Star Medal, the purple heart and many other awards. The one of which he was most proud was the "Screaming Eagle" given for bravery from the 101st airborne. John was always proud of the service that he gave to his country.
Following John's tour of duty in the service, he went to work as an electrician in Eugene and remained in that profession until his retirement. In 1994 he moved to Crescent, Ore., and in 2001 moved to Halfway, Ore. John "Army John" affectionately referred to by his friends, enjoyed hunting and fishing, motorcycle riding, gun collecting and playing the drums.  
John and Charlotte knew each other most of their lives.  They met when Charlotte was 13 and John 15 in Eugene, Ore. In his youth, Charlotte remembered John as being the most kind and respectful. During their lives, although they traveled different paths, they were always drawn back together.  Both referred to each other as their first and last loves.
John is survived by his wife Charlotte of Halfway, daughters Kimberly Cooper of Lebanon, Ore. and Tina Vogel of Willamina, Ore; son Pat Cartwright of Eugene, Ore.; brothers Bob Vogel of Portland and Ed Vogel of Tijuana, Mexico, sister Sue Lane of Eugene, Ore.; 9 grandchildren Robbie, Sabrina, Ashley, Michele, Doug, Brooke, Dexter, Spencer and Brandon; 4 great grandchildren Veronica, Andrea, Giovanni (Buddy) and Rogelio.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
