Powder Valley Boys Win OOL Championship By Eden Taylor
The full Baker High School gym is always reeling with excitement at the Boys OOL championship game. This year local favorite, North Powder, took on the Wallowa Cougars.
The first score heighted the enthusiasm as Powder’s Jordan Pratt took a rebound and dunked it through the hoop. North Powder took the early lead. Pratt blocked several shots to intimidate the Cougars near the basket. At the end of the first quarter it was Powder 15, Wallowa 11. The second quarter saw the Badgers lose their lead as Wallowa put on a run to score 9 straight points. When Powder’s Trenton Dixon hit a three, was fouled, and made the free throw, the 4 point play gave the Badgers the lead for good. At half time the score was North Powder 30, Wallowa 24. Dixon scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half.
The Badgers took control of the second half and put on a scoring barrage that gave them an 11 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. Pratt and Justin Allen made all of the points for the Badgers in that quarter. The fourth quarter was more frustration for Wallowa as their shots just didn’t fall. North Powder slowed the game down and garnered the victory 49-39.
County Purchases New Bulldozer By Eden Taylor e County Commissioners approved the purchase of a 2008 Caterpillar D6T XL dozer from Western States Equipment for $242.737. The Road Department has money in their budget for the purchase. This dozer replaces a 40-year old dozer. The Road Department researched the possibility of purchasing a used bulldozer, but it was found more cost effective to purchase a new one at a government rate. Tax Accessor
The Commissioners received an update from Alice Durflinger on the Treasurer’s Department. Durflinger was happy to report that taxes are still being paid and that revenue is only down .86% from last year. She indicated that 81% of the taxes levied are paid in full by the Nov. 15 deadline. A lot of this is attributed to lenders holding escrow accounts from their mortgage customers and paying the taxes at the deadline. Alice also said that several departments are now able to accept bankcards.
Kindergarten In The High School? By Eden Taylor At the work meeting prior to the School Board Meeting on Feb. 17, District 5J Superintendent Don Ulrey presented a new proposal that would eliminate the necessity of moving the 8th graders to the High School or the 6th graders to the Middle School. The proposal is to move the Kindergarten to the Northwest wing of the High School. The Kindergarten would be self contained and parking would be changed to accommodate busing and insure safety for the 5-year-olds. A playground would be added on the nearby grounds.
The School Board took a tour of the proposed area of the High School and seemed pleased with the possibilities. Another plus to this move could be high school students gaining experience as TA’s with the kindergarteners.
