Marvin Burgraff (Nov. 22, 1938 - July 30, 2009)
Marvin Bert Burgraff, 70, of Halfway passed away July 30, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. His funeral service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m., at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church followed by interment at the Pinehaven Cemetery. Pastor Bill Shields officiated. Following the service, friends were invited to join the family at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall for a reception. Marvin was born Nov. 22, 1938 in Bellingham, Washington to Marion and Elsie Lavern (Tobiaseen) Burgraff. He attended Meridian High School, graduating in 1957. Marvin worked for Idaho Power Company, retiring in 1997. Marvin married ReaLynn Ashby in Winnemucca, Nev., on June 6, 1969. The couple had just recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family. Marvin was very active in his community. He was the Mayor of Halfway for 4 years, a volunteer for the Halfway-Oxbow Ambulance and the Pine Valley Fire Dept. Board, and on the Baker County Planning Commission. He is survived by his wife, ReaLynn Burgraff of Halfway, Ore.; mother, Elsie Burgraff of Bellingham, Wash.; two sisters of Bellingham, Wash.; loving children; and numerous grandchildren. Marvin was preceded in death by his father Marion Burgraff. Elva Lorene Chandler (May 26, 1932 - July 31, 2009)
Elva Lorene Chandler, 77, a longtime resident of Richland, Ore. peacefully passed away with her family by her side on Friday, July 31, 2009, at her home in Richland. Lorene was born May 26, 1932, in Richland to Robert Henry Williams and Elva (Waelty) Williams. She married John E. Chandler on June 12, 1946, in Boise, Idaho. They divorced, then 37 years later she remarried the love of her life, John E. Chandler in Eugene, Ore., on June 12, 1984. When Lorene left Richland, she moved to Springfield, Ore., where she lived until moving back to Richland in 1981. Lorene was an EMT for the Eagle Valley Ambulance for 20 years. She loved being able to help people. In her later years she worked for the Forest Service in the Senior Program for eight years. She loved her job because it allowed her to work in her beloved Eagle Mountains. In the Eagle Mountains she loved to pick huckleberries, hunt for mushrooms, camp and hunt. She loved playing cards with her friends, and reading on the porch. John and Lorene lived along side New Bridge Road for many years and after John's passing she moved to Eagle Valley RV Park where she rented a small home from Steve and Sue Adams. She became a very close friend and companion to Lorene and she loved Sue like a daughter. Lorene enjoyed morning coffee at the Shorthorn Bar & Grill for many years visiting with the coffee group. She was blessed with many close friends and enjoyed the time they spent together. Lorene is survived by her children; John A. and Linda Chandler of Baker City, Sarita and Mike Raney of Huntington, Ore., Bill Chandler of Baker City, Lorri and Steve Platt of Springfield, Ore. and Walt (Jr) and Darla Hewitt of Springfield, Ore. Four step-children; Terry, Mike and Tod Chandler, Carol Gerhing, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; brother Robert and Ethlyn Williams Jr.; Sisters Isla Graven, Dorothy and John Randall. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband John. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Eagle Valley Grange. Melba Jeffords (June 16, 1911 - July 29, 2009)
Melba Jeffords, 98, a long-time resident of Baker City, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Services. Visitation was held Friday, July 31, 2009, at Coles Funeral Home from 2-5 p.m. Her funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Saturday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. with Bishop Ernie Collard conducting the services. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends were invited to join the family at a reception and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the services. Melba was born June 16, 1911, in Cove, Ore., to Smith Hyatt and Chloe (Burns) Mitchell. She was the second of 12 children: four girls and 8 boys. When Melba was 16 years of age, the family moved to Baker City where she met and married Vernon Lawrence Jeffords on Aug. 14, 1928. They lived in Baker City, Montana and Idaho Falls. After Vernon passed away in June, 1963 in Idaho Falls, Melba moved to Provo, Utah, Boise, Idaho, and then back to Baker City. While in Baker City, she worked for the state Adult and Family Services. Melba was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions. The last several years she spent a lot of time doing genealogy. Melba is survived by her four children: Wayne and Jacque Jeffords of West Valley City, Utah; Dona and Dick Lemmon of Pendleton, Oregon; Verna and Don Parker of Orem, Utah; Larry and Erin Jeffords of Ogden, Utah; a daughter-in-law: Myrna Jeffords of Alpine, Utah; 28 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, 20 great, great grandchildren, brothers: Clair and Rose Mitchell of Phoenix, Arizona; Delbert and David Mitchell of Boise, Idaho; sisters: Bernice Vavner of Boise, Idaho; Merle Singley of Baker City, Ore.; sister-in-law: Walter and Dorothy Jeffords of McMinnville, Ore. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; son: Keith Jeffords; parents; brothers: Forrest, Frank, Harold, Grant and Richard Mitchell; sister: Mona Jean Lemmon; grandson: Jeremy Jeffords and great granddaughter Raven Jeffords. Beatrice Samson (died July 26, 2009)
Beatrice “Bea” Ileen Samson, age 80, went to meet her Lord Jesus on July 26, 2009. Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 28, from Noon-8 p.m. at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. A graveside service for Bea was held on Wednesday, July 29, at Noon at the IOOF Cemetery in Lebanon, Oregon. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception at Waterloo Park following the service. Bea’s love for her Lord Jesus was top priority while the love for her family ranked next. Her kindness and generosity was shown in the lives of all the people she helped. Many times, she did without her own essentials so someone else could be helped. She never thought about herself unless forced to do so. She enjoyed playing bingo but truly loved going to yard sales. She seldom purchased anything for herself but always thought of other people that may enjoy this or that. Bea lived the last five years of her life in Baker City, Ore. Before, that, she lived for many years in Lebanon, Ore. She is preceded in death by her husband Marvin E. Samson, three children: Chestly, David and Joann, a brother, a sister, and three great grandchildren. The loved ones Bea leaves behind are daughters: Bonnie Bates of Soldotna, Alaska; Lise Samson of Star, Idaho, Shirley Hunter of Baker City, Ore., Pansy Samson of Soldotna, Alaska, Diana Samson of Plymouth, Wash., Barbara Samson of Boise, Idaho; son Marvin Samson of Plains, Mont.; 34 grandchildren; 67+ great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; 2-great-great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends. Lewis Wirth (July 10, 1928 - July 29, 2009)
Lewis Howard Wirth, age 81, passed away July 29, 2009 in Orem, Utah. Lewis was born July 10, 1928, in Burns Lake, British Columbia, son of Joseph and Inez Wirth, where he lived until the age of 8 years. His family then moved to Medical Springs, Ore., where he farmed and ranched with his family. He graduated from Baker City High School, where he met and married Arlene Johnson. They were married April 9, 1950, in Baker City, Ore. Together they raised their family of four children. Dad continued to farm and ranch and also became employed at Powder River Livestock Equipment Company. In 1961 Dad moved his family to Orem, Utah, where he helped establish a manufacturing facility for Powder River, in Provo, Uta. He worked for Powder River for 25 years. He later was employed by Brown Strauss Steel in Lindon, Utah, where he finished his working years. Dad was a big fan of Utah Jazz Basketball and BYU football. He enjoyed many hours watching basketball and football. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dad was a member of Christ Evangelical Church. Dad leaves a living legacy in Utah County. His name will be carried on for many generations to come. We as a family are all thankful for the time we had with you, and thank you for all the great memories. We will love you always, and miss you until we meet again. He is survived by his wife Arlene, his children Julie (Jerry) Sorensen, Orem, Utah, Scott Wirth, Baker City, Ore., Blaine (Laura) Wirth, Orem, Utah, Jeff (Jolene) Wirth, Pleasant Grove, Utah and his grandchildren, Ryan, Rory, and Ashley Sorensen; Hank, and Jena Wirth; Matt, Jake and Michael Wirth; Dana Thornton, Stacey Towers, and Nick Bowman, and twenty great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Albert (Dee) Wirth, Albany, Ore., sister Arleta Turner, Albany Ore., sisters-in-law Helen Wirth, Baker City, Ore., Margie (Jim) Stewart, Anacortes, Washington, and Evelyn (Frank) Keith, Baker City Ore. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Harold Wirth, and brothers-in-law Earl Johnson and Roger Turner, Baker City, Ore. Our family wishes to thank all of the staff at Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for all the love and care that they provided.
