Lorene Bradford
(March 25, 1922 - Sept. 24, 2009)

On Sept. 24, 2009 Dorothy Lorene Bradford “Sis,” 87 of Unity, Ore. slipped her earthly bonds into the arms of her heavenly father. A graveside service was held Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at the Prairie City Cemetery. Pastor Dan Mason with the Burnt River Community Church officiated.
Lorene Bradford was born on March 25, 1922 to Mads and Nina (Goins) Sorenson in Prairie City, Ore. Lorene graduated from Prairie City High School in 1940, completing all 12 years. She went on to work for Thrifty Food and Electric as a clerk and bookkeeper until 1960.
On December 5, 1965 Lorene married Roland Bradford. And to this union a daughter Patricia Mae was born.
Lorene moved to Unity and ranched with her husband until his death in 1966. She went to work for Stratton Store part time and working into full-time until she retired in 2000.
She also served as a city recorder for the town of Unity from 1973 until 1986.
Lorene loved to go fishing and really enjoyed watching bull riding on the t.v. She was also a member of the Prairie City Riding Club.
Lorene Bradford was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roland Bradford, a step son Gail Bradford, sisters; Juanita Clark and Belva, her brother Howard and two grandsons Mitch and Darren Bradford.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia Mae of Unity, sisters; Sharon (Ron) Dunne of Nampa, Ida. and Delphine MacPherson of Ontario, Ore. A long time friend and companion Larry Dean Stratton. Also surving are 3 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Larry Dean Stratton, Alice Bradford, Lee Greenwood, Yvonne Taylor, Richard and Bonnie Stratton and Erin Workman for all their time and loving care in Sis’s last day’s.
Driskill Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.


Barry Chapman
(June 13, 1961 - Sept. 24, 2009)

A bright light went out with the passing of Barry Chapman on Sept. 24, 2009. He was a big spirit who lived his life with zest. If anyone needed help he was always there to give it. Those of us who knew Barry will be forever grateful that he crossed our paths.
Arnold Barry Chapman was born in Portland, Ore. on June 13, 1961. He graduated from high school in McMinnville, Ore.
As a young man, Barry worked in home construction, then became an elevator mechanic in Portland. He lived on his 50 ft. classic wooden Ketenburg sailboat on the Columbia River in Portland then moved it to Scappoose. He then bought a houseboat and rebuilt it. Barry moved to Baker City in 2004 where he built hand-crafted canoes, kayaks, and furniture. He joined the local Woodland Association and earned a certificate as Master Woodlander.
Barry was proud of his Native American heritage. He was an accomplished scuba diver and loved kayaking. He was a great cook.
Barry is survived by his four children, Megan, Ryan, Jonathan and Savannah; father, Frank Chapman; step-mother, Jean Chapman; brothers, Doug W. Kellie, Donald J. Chapman and Mike Crabtree; sisters Darla J. Bradley and Teralee L. Balcom; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service for Barry at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Gray’s West Pioneer Chapel in Baker City. A gathering will follow (location to be announced at the service).

Erma Oard
(Dec. 1, 1925 - Sept. 2009)

Erma Lee Oard, 83, a resident of Baker City, Ore. died Friday at Meadowbrook Place. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date in the Burns Cemetery, Burns, Ore.
Mrs. Oard was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Burns, Ore., a daughter of Harold and Ethel (Hankins) Cawlfield.  She received her education in one room schools and Graduated in Burns, Ore.  She grew up on several ranches in Harney and Grant counties.  After graduating she worked at the Ft. Lewis Army Base, in Washington as a civilian during WW II.  She married Albert Oard Dec. 9, 1943 in Burns.
They made their home in various locations in Oregon while Al worked for the U.S. Forest Service.   They came to Baker City in 1975 where her husband was promoted to Forest Supervisor for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.  After his retirement they moved to Colorado for 5 years and retained a home here in Baker City, Ore.  They traveled to Yuma, Arizona for 12 years for the winter, she loved it.  Her married years were dedicated to her family and she worked hard to be a special wife and mother. Mrs. Oard loved horses and enjoyed the retirement years with her husband.
She is survived by a son Michael, Telluride, Colo., son and daughter-in-law; James H. and Svetlana Oard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a daughter, Jane Lee Case of Redmond, Ore., brother and sister-in-law; Gaylen and Mary Lou Cawlfield, Seattle, Wash.,  Three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Oard was preceded in death by her parents and husband Al.

Beatrice Vetter
(Feb. 4, 1916 - Sept. 19, 2009)

Beatrice Vetter, 93, died Sept. 19, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Health Services in Baker City, Ore.,  A private family interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.  A memorial service was held at Calvary Baptist Church in Baker City at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009. Pastor Dave Deputy officiated. Friends were  invited to join the family for a reception at the church following the service.
Beatrice Irene Vetter was born Feb. 4, 1916, in Webster, Wisc., to Ida C. (Benston) and Lloyd J. VanCurren.  She graduated from Barron High School in 1935.  Beatrice was a waitress at the Barron Creamery until she moved to Baker City with her father in the spring of 1945.  She was a waitress at the Royal Café when she met her future husband, Charles F. Vetter.
Charles and Beatrice were married in November 1945.  They had four daughters: Antonette, Darlene, Irene and Nancy.  Mr. Vetter died December 1961.
Bea was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served in many positions including church clerk, Sunday school teacher and on the kitchen committee. She enjoyed sewing and being in the sunshine caring for her garden.  Bea was in her element as hostess for family and friends. Her home was always open.
Mrs. Vetter was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Darlene F. Vetter and three grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters: Irene Martin of Vacaville, Calif., Antonette Barnes of Pasco, Wash., and Nancy Vetter of Baker City, Ore.; four grandchildren:  Rodney Barnes and wife, Luana, Michael Barnes and wife, Tammy, Daniel Martin, Stephanie Martin and fiancé Brian Maffei; four great grandchildren:  Michael T., Amanda, Kaycee and Thomas Barnes; and one great-great grandson, Michael A. Barnes.
