Bomb Threat Closes School
By Debby Schoeningh Baker High School was evacuated Tuesday morning due to a bomb threat. Sergeant Kirk McCormick with the Baker City Police Department said a threat was left on the school’s voice mail system Monday night and was discovered by school staff Tuesday morning. McCormick said the caller indicated that a bomb was scheduled to go off at noon Tuesday.
Students were evacuated to the now vacant North Baker school shortly after after classes began Tuesday morning.
McCormick said Police and school staff searched the building and did not locate anything. The Public Works Department barricaded the streets leading into the school and the Baker County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the evacuation. Students were allowed back into the BHS gymnasium at approximately 10 a.m. and school was dismissed for the day.
McCormick said they have identified a suspect in the bomb threat and the investigation is continuing.
“The local agencies worked well together and the evacuation went smoothly,” said McCormick.
OTEC Distributes Refunds For 15th Consecutive Year Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC) will return $1.3 million to its members this week. This marks the 15th consecutive year that OTEC has returned capital credits to its members.
One of the basic principles of a non-profit, member owned, cooperative is to return equity to its members. When OTEC was formed 21 years ago, the board made a commitment to members that it would follow this principle when the cooperative’s financial position allows it to do so. Members have been fortunate over the past 15 years that OTEC has been able to return about $18.2 million in capital credit refunds.
City Manager Selection One Step Closer
By Mark Bogart The background checks are completed and the Baker City Council is ready to proceed with the selection of a new City Manager. A special meeting has been called for Thursday (today) at 9 a.m. in the council chambers to discuss the results and consider possible terms of employment.
After opening the meeting, the Council will go into executive (closed) session to discuss the background information. The Council will then return to open session to consider possible contract terms.
However, the final selection decision will probably not be made until Friday at the earliest, due to a requirement for public input prior to hiring. If terms of employment are tentatively settled with the Council’s first choice, a second special meeting will be held Friday at noon. At that time the Council could name its selection and allow public input. Only after that will the position be offered to one of the two finalists.
Bulldogs Place Second In State
By Eden Taylor On Saturday, Dec. 5, the Bulldogs played for their first 4A State Championship. Though they faced a superior Marist Team, the Baker boys played their hearts out. The final score 55-16, gave Marist, a private school, their fourth championship in this decade. Marist will move to 5A next year.
Coach Johnson said, “We certainly did not expect that type of finish, but it does not diminish what was accomplished by the players. To go 11-2 is a real credit to their determination. The support of the community was a great boost in the confidence of the guys. It was great to be one of the last teams playing.”
