(Jan. 4, 1922—Dec. 14, 2009)

Donald R.Clark, 87, of Baker City died Dec. 14, 2009, at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.  His memorial service was Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the Baker City Armory.  Reverend Aletha Bonebrake of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and Pastor Lynda Clark, Donald’s daughter,  officiated.  The US Army National Guard performed full military rites.
Cremation was at Eastern Oregon Pioneer Crematory in Baker City and inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring of 2010.  
Donald Rinard Clark was born Jan. 4, 1922 in Baker, Ore. to Walter Alphus and Grace Ellentine (Rinard) Clark.  He graduated from Baker High School in 1940 and served in the US Army from 1940 to 1945.  He survived World War II and stayed active in the National Guard.  In 1981 he retired as a Captain from the US Army National Guard.  Later, he served on the Siting Committee for the new Baker City Armory.
After his Army discharge, he attended the University of Oregon, graduating in 1949.  He married Ann Sandidge in 1951 in Baker, Ore.  They had two children, Lynda and Wayne.  
Don worked at the family business, Clark Outdoor Advertising.  Later, he then became district manager for SAIF until his retirement in 1997.  After retirement, he became an independent insurance fraud investigator.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, stamp collecting, cars and car racing and Baker County history and memorabilia.  Don coached Baker Little League, the Bulldog Boosters, the National Society of Scabbard & Blade, YMCA Youth Football, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, the Advertising Association of the West (AAW), and the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs (ICSCC).  He won E-Production Class in the Portland Grand Prix in 1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Grace Clark and the brother, Alphus Clark.  He is survived by his wife, Ann Clark of Baker City; his daughter, Lynda Clark of Salem, Ore.; his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Laurie Clark of North Bend, Wash.; grandchildren, Jeremy, Ruth and Lucien Golar; and great grandchildren, Bailey and Riley Golar.

Carroll “Mac” McEwen
(Dec. 19, 1935—Dec. 9, 2009)

Carroll passed away peacefully at his Montague, Calif., home on Dec. 9, 2009. He was 73 years old.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1935 in Corning, Calif. to Roy and Edith McEwen, where he grew up on the family fruit and nut farm.
He graduated from Corning High School then went on to Shasta College, where he met and married his wife of 53 years, Cleowa Smith, of Happy Camp, Calif.
Following his time at Shasta College, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he learned his knowledge of electronics. He was stationed in Korea through most of his service.
Upon his discharge from the service, he began his career with the Klamath National Forest Service, where he worked for 34 years in the “Radio Shop.” Also during this time, he and his good friend Don Pollard co-owned Fidelity Electronics in Yreka. After retirement he and Cleowa spent many winters as snowbirds in Arizona, where they were able to spend time with old friends and made many new ones.
Carroll enjoyed traveling the U.S. in his R.V., writing political articles, taking photographs and playing on his computer.
Carroll is survived by his wife Cleowa; his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Bow Lynne McEwen of Baker City, Curtis McEwen of Baker City, and Steve and Vicky McEwen of Montague, Calif.; and his daughter Janice McEwen of Redding. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Brittnee McEwen of Pendleton, Ore., Kristopher McEwen of Baker City, Ore., Harlee and Herman McEwen of Montague; and his great-grandchild Markus Corey Craven of Pendleton, Ore. He leaves his sister Phyllis Herrick of Connecticut.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Jacqueline; his brothers, Frances and Allen; and his daughter-in-law Tammy McEwen.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Cir., Yreka, CA 96097, who so lovingly helped take care of Carroll in his last months. McDonalds Chapel of Redding is in charge of arrangements. No services are planned.


Alexandra Dawn Mix
(Nov. 30, 2009-Dec. 18, 2009)

Alexandra Dawn Mix, a 19-day-old baby girl, passed away Dec. 18, 2009, at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, Wash.
Baby Alexandra is survived by parents Desiree Funderburk and Anthony Mix, grandparents John and Tami Smith, grandmother Pauline Mix, Great grandparents: Judy and Floyd Holm all of Spokane; Great grandparents: Mike and Therese Funderburk, Jim and Deanna Grimes of Eugene, Ore. and Doyle and Lynette Perry of Baker City as well as many aunts and uncles.  
Alexandra was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother Dawn Funderburk.
A premature birth, Alexandra weighed one pound, four ounces at birth and one pound, eight ounces at passing.
During her short life hospital staff constantly commented on what a fighter she was. She loved to lay on her tummy and hear her mommy and daddy’s voices. She had very ticklish feet.
Heritage Funeral home in Spokane will handle cremation. There will be memorial service in the summer.


Walter Alvin Ostwald
(Oct. 6, 1923—Dec. 11, 2009)

Walter Alvin Ostwald, of Baker City, Ore., passed away Dec. 11, 2009, at the age of 86. Except for his military service, and a short period working elsewhere, he spent his entire life in Baker City.
His funeral was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel.  Tim Ostwald, cousin of Walter officiated.  The Army National Guard offered military rites.  Friends were invited to gather at Gray’s West after the service for a reception.  Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery later.
Walter was born in Baker City on Oct. 6, 1923, to Paul William and Anna Bell Grubb Ostwald.  Anna was formerly of Halfway, Ore.  After his graduation from Baker City High School, Walter enlisted in the US Navy, and during the last years of World War II served in the Pacific Theater as Machinists Mate aboard LST No. 476.
Upon discharge from the Navy, Walter worked in a machine shop in Portland for a short time before returning to Baker City to join his father in operation of his machine shop.  Walter operated the Ostwald Machine Shop, established by his father as a saw-sharpening and cutlery shop, nearly 90 years ago.  Walter diversified his shop to include specialty welding, ornamental wrought iron fabrication, and machining related to repair of custom-built mill and mining equipment, operating the shop until his retirement about ten years ago.
On June 17, 1956, Walt married Eva Mary Nelson of Rupert, Idaho, a well-known and popular teacher in the Commercial Arts at Baker City High School.  They were avid square dancers, purchased a home on Park Street, and enjoyed cruising the backcountry on their matching snowmobiles.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva, in 1979. His only sister, Laura Mae Ostwald Tracey, died in 2003.  He is survived by two first cousins, Leonard Fred Ostwald of Concord, Calif., and Lydick Timothy Ostwald of Boulder, Colo.
