THE RETURN OF AN ELK—One of the ‘Old Gentlemen’ of the mountains has returned to the Anthony Creek Wildlife Area, and is treating visitors as if the spring, summer, and fall of ’09 had never occurred.  Scoop Loop, now a very big six-point bull elk, is back to the feed grounds located near North Powder, and he is showing off his 2009 antler growth!. According to Alice Trindle and Susan Triplett, who have been offering elk-viewing tours via horse-drawn wagon for 19 years at this site, “We have been watching Scoop Loop grow for at least the past 8 years, and this year he has added a good three to five inches in his antler span, making him one of largest bulls we have ever had on the site.” Tours will be offered everyday through through January 3, 2010, and then resuming their weekend schedule through the end of February.  The first ride departs at 10:30 a.m.  Tours last about half-an-hour, and the last tour typically leaves at 2 p.m. (pst). Currently, they are feeding about 183 head at the Anthony Creek site.  About 10 to 15 of those animals are branch-antler bulls. Call 541-856-3356 for more information.
