Local Police Issue Warnings For New Cell Phone/Driving Law By Debby Schoeningh The days of holding a cell phone to your ear or fingering out a text message while driving may be coming to an end — at least for those who don’t want to pay a $142 minimum fine.
The new law, which went to effect Jan. 1 prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using all mobile communication devices, hands-free or not. However, those over 18 can use a cell phone while driving if they are using a hands-free accessory. Sgt. Kirk McCormick with the Baker City Police Department said he isn’t aware of any citations that have been given locally.
