Phoebe Calder Burby passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at the age of 104.  A visitation was held at Coles Funeral Home Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, from 4-7 p.m. Her funeral was held Friday, Jan. 15, 2010,  noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Ernest Collard officiating.  Friends were invited to join the family for a reception at the LDS church following the graveside service.
Born on Aug. 6, 1905, in Baker, Ore., to Delia Azubah Eardley and Mark William Calder, she was the eighth of 12 children, seven sisters and four brothers. At age 8 she was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Powder River near the railroad trestle in South Baker. She remained an active member of the church throughout her life and was a member of the Baker 1st Ward at the time of her death.
She married Ernest Albert Burby on Nov. 20, 1924, and together they raised a family of three children; Ernest Albert Jr., Virginia May, and Robert Glenn.
Although life afforded her opportunities to live in various areas of the West, she was always drawn back to Baker City and returned to stay permanently in the mid-60s.
Phoebe always loved nature and the outdoors. She was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, and hiker. Together with her husband and children they purchased property near Granite, Ore., and built a family cabin. The cabin served as a retreat and a gathering place for children and grandchildren for more than 30 years.
She is survived by her son Bob Burby and his wife Joan of Laverkin, Utah, eight grandchildren, more than 20 great grandchildren, and many, many great-great grand children.
Throughout her life she was a wonderful example and guide to all those she encountered. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Beth Rowen
(April 22, 1916—Jan. 13, 2010)

Lylah Elizabeth (McNutt) Rowan was born April 22, 1916, in a tent in Roosevelt, Utah.
Three months later she and her parents, James Oliver McNutt and Emily Melinda Thomas McNutt, returned to the family homestead on Clear Creek in Pine Valley. She attended Sunny Dell School and Pine Valley High School, graduating at 16.  Beth attended Eastern Oregon Normal in La Grande earning a lifetime teaching certificate in two years.  Her first teaching job was at Dry Creek School where they started a hot lunch program.  Beth taught on and off in Halfway schools for the next 38 years.
Beth married Oliver Harold (Con) Rowen on June 17, 1938, in Weiser, Idaho.
The couple ranched in Pine Valley on the family farm raising two children, Kelly and Gayla.  Beth was very family oriented.  She loved family vacations and picnics with wiener roasts.
There wasn't much Beth wouldn't try or many places she wouldn't go.  She tried her hand at snowmobiling, jet skiing and horseback camping. When para sailing came along last year she wished she had been 10 years younger so she could try it, but was content to watch as the rest of the family soared.
She loved rodeos.  During her lifetime she missed only one Labor Day Fair, due to a family vacation to South Dakota.  She holds the same record for the Jr. Rodeo, missing that one for her nephew's wedding.  Beth liked to be among the first to arrive at the rodeo and wanted to be the last one to leave, enjoying every minute.
Beth passed away at her home in Halfway Jan. 13, 2010, after 93 years of happy, healthy living.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Con Rowen, brother James McNutt and son-in-law Kerry Macomber.
Beth is survived by: her children Kelly Rowen and wife Sue, Gayla Macomber, her grandchildren Casey Rowen and wife Kim. Cammie deCastro and husband Chris, Jake Rowen, and Lexy Hubberts and husband Dave.  Beth's great grandchildren were the apples of her eye, Kerri and Kadie Rowen, Ryan and Natalie Hubberts.  Beth looked forward to visits with her South Dakota nieces and nephews.  She had a special place in her heart for nephews Jim and Dick McNutt who spent many hours working and playing with her family on the ranch.
A memorial service was held for Beth on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Halfway.  A private family interment will be held on her birthday in April at Pine Haven Cemetery.
Those who would like to make a memorial donation in memory of Beth may do so to the Pine Eagle Clinic, Hells Canyon Jr. Rodeo, or the Pine Valley Fair Association through Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.
