Fred Ward Graves
(May 19, 1037-April 18, 2010)

Fred Ward Graves, 72 of Huntington, went to be with the Lord on the morning of April 18, 2010.  A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton, Ore.  Reverend Otis Frost will officiate.
Fred was born May 19, 1937, in Centralia, Wash. to Shelby and Gertrude (Pettyjohn) Graves.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years Darleen Graves of Huntington, sons, Stan and wife Gloria, Steve and wife Pam, Rod and wife Roxanne and brother Dave and his wife Betty.  Fred has 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Pauline Jenson and Marge Taylor.
Family and friends are invited to a no-host meal and fellowship time at Shari’s Restaurant in Pendleton.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society through Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Baker City, OR. 97814

Wayne Hyde
(Nov. 18, 1925 - April 14, 2010)

Wayne Hyde, 84, of Baker City, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Health Services.  
Wayne Jennings Hyde was born on Nov. 18, 1925 in Webster County, Missouri to Homer B. and Lois (McMenus) Hyde. Wayne was educated in Missouri and came to Oregon during World War II. He worked in wholesale and retail businesses for 10 years.  He then worked for the U. S. Forest Service for 30 years, retiring in 1983 as a Forest Fleet manager.
Wayne married Nell Savely in 1947. In 1949 their daughter Cherry Lee arrived. That marriage ended in 1952.
He married Juanita Campbell in 1970. She passed away in 1992.
His hobbies were fishing, gardening, stamp and coin collection and rodeos. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge, and the American Legion.
Wayne is survived by a daughter, Cherry Hedin of Portland, OR; granddaughter, Kimberly Harney of Portland, OR;  sisters, Jane Rader and Arlene Davis of Marshfield, Missouri; brother, Jerry Hyde of Highland Park, Texas; step son, Michael Campbell of Pendleton, OR; and many devoted friends and neighbors in Baker City.
At Wayne‚s request there will be no funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of choice through Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.

Marilyn Herrmann
(Aug. 25, 1926 -April 12, 2010)
 
Marilyn Elizabeth Herrmann of Halfway, formerly of La Grande passed away at her home at Pine Creek, April 12, 2010 of natural causes.  She was 83.
Marilyn was born Aug. 25, 1926 in Hinsdale, Illinois, where she grew up and attended school. She came west to visit and met Jack Herrmann and they married Oct. 1, 1947 in Boise, Idaho.
She was a homemaker, until the children were in school and then worked as a bookkeeper, bartender and housekeeper. She retired as a housekeeper from the Pony Soldier Motel in the early 1990's.
Marilyn moved to Pine Creek in 1998 following the death of her husband and enjoyed her home there until her death.
She enjoyed knitting, visiting with friends, her children and grandchildren. Marilyn was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Bears, of which not even a family member could interrupt - even at her front door was a sign that read "Not right now, I'm watching the game." 
Marilyn is survived by her sister Barbara Matocha of Hinsdale, Illinois; two daughters Nancy Herrmann of Halfway and Bonnie Herrmann of La Grande; Granddaughters and their husbands - Tina and Rick Bowen of La Grande, Or., Heidi and Darryn Ruth, Kady and Mark Stillman, Heather and John Gastin all of Pendleton, Oregon.  Grandsons and their wives Shane and Christa Rogers of La Grande, Geoff and Kristin Olsen of St. Cloud, Minnesota; 13 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Jack and son Gary.
A gathering of family and friends will be planned for later in August at Marilyn's home at Pine Creek.

Erik Johnson
(April 17, 1960-March 29, 2010)
Erik David “E.J.” Johnson, 49, of Baker City, died March 29, 2010, at his home. Funeral service was held  Saturday, April 3, at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene.
Erik was born on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1960, at Baker City. He attended St. Francis Academy, Baker Junior High and Baker High School, graduating in 1978. He graduated in 1982 from the University of Oregon in Eugene with degrees in health and math.
Erik began his teaching career at Roseburg, Ore.. In 1985 he returned to Baker City to teach at Baker High School. 2010 was his 25th year teaching at the high school.
His lifelong passion was teaching and coaching. He loved all his “kids” and spoke of the rewards he received working with them daily.
His love for coaching was as strong as it was for teaching. He coached his entire tenure at the high school. Erik was the head track coach from 1987 to 2005. He served as head basketball coach for two years and assisted in coaching football every year and had added baseball in recent years.
In his free time, Erik spent most holidays with his family. He was the favorite uncle who visited all the nieces and nephews and offered tremendous support whenever and wherever it was needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H. B. “Bard” and Yvonne Johnson Hochbrueckner; stepfather, Thomas Hochbrueckner; brother, Paul Johnson, and sister, Shelley Powell, sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson, and brother, Christopher Johnson.
Survivors include his brother, Scott Jonsson and his wife, Maggie; sister, Diane Walmer and her husband, John; niece, Katie Broweleit and husband, Matthew; niece, Kara Afshar, and her husband, Salim; nieces, Erin and Laura Walmer, Annie Jonsson, and Cassie Powell; nephews, Alex and Matt Jonsson, Erik Johnson and Caden Powell; great-nieces, Annabelle and Elizabeth Broweleit; and great-nephew, Andrew Broweleit.
Memorial contributions may be made to Baker High School in honor of Erik Johnson.
  
Dorotha Miller
(Feb. 27, 1919 - April 6, 2010)

Dorotha Ann Miller, 91, died April 6, 2010 at her home in Eugene, Oregon. Her funeral was Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Gray's West & Co Pioneer Chapel with Bill Walters and Ken Grafham of Calvary Baptist Church Officiating.
Interment followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Miller was born Dorotha Ann Cloud Feb. 27, 1919 in Baker City, Oregon. She was the only daughter of Carl W. Cloud and Velma A. (Long) Cloud who were long time residents of Baker City.  Dorotha was educated in the Baker school system and graduated from Baker City High School in 1937.  She worked as secretary for Baker High School following graduation.
Dorotha married Harvey Randall Miller (BHS class of 36) in Boise,Idaho Sept.1 1940. Residents of Baker City until the interruption of World War II, they transferred to California where Harvey served as a flight instructor.
Dorotha enjoyed many of the activities that Baker City offered - especially taking a picnic lunch along while picking huckleberries.  She taught Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church with her mother, Velma Cloud, and grandmother, Daisy Long. She also enjoyed playing the piano.
Moving to Eugene in 1963, she began working at Sacred Heart hospital until she retired.  She continued teaching Sunday School at the First Baptist Church for many years. In 1983, "Dot and Harv" enjoyed a wonderful Holy Land Tour lead by the Pastor of their church.
Harvey preceded Dorotha in death in June 2005, just 3 months before their 65th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include her sons, John D. Miller and family of Philadelphia, Pa. and Carl T. Miller and family of Eugene, Oregon.  She has 6 grandchildren.

Ruse Nelson
(May 25, 1912 - April 15, 2010)

Ruse Vernon Nelson, 98, of Baker City, died April 15, 2010 of natural causes at Settler’s Park Assisted Living Facility in Baker City. Private services will be held and announced at a later date.
Mr. Nelson was born May 25, 1912 in Nampa, Idaho, the son of Vernon and Eugenia (Ruse) Nelson. He married Ruth Elizabeth Hillyard on Sept. 6, 1935. They were married for 35 years. He married Lucile Nelson in 1973. They were married 28 years. 
Mr. Nelson moved to Pendleton, Oregon in 1914. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1930. He worked at Jack Allan Auto Parts store until he and his family moved to John Day in 1945. Mr. Nelson and his wife purchased a home in Canyon City in 1946 where he resided for 28 years. He worked for Moty and Van Dyke Auto Supply in John Day for 29 years until he retired in 1974 to Waldport, Oregon where he enjoyed fishing the Alsea River.  He and his wife moved back to Pendleton in 1985 where he remained until he moved to Baker City in 2004. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard sales, auctions and most of all spending time with his family. He was a kind and loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include his three daughters, Sandra Smith of Baker City, Marla Nelson of Powell Butte, and Sue Holliday of Seneca; his son-in-law’s Rodney Smith of Baker City and Allan Polenz of Powell Butte; sister-in-law Jane Wheeler of Pendleton, three step-children, Norm Nelson of Canyon City, Bev Rickets of Fairbanks, Alaska and Bob Nelson of Portland; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Nelson, his second wife Lucile Nelson, his sister Olga Vivian Kempthorn, a step-son Wendel Nelson and grandson Billy Clyde Holliday.

Glen Petty
(June 28, 1929 - April 17, 2010)

Glen Earl Petty, 80, of Baker City passed away after a long illness at his home surrounded by his loving family on April 8, 2010.  A gathering in his memory was held Saturday, April 17, 2010, at the VFW Hall in Baker City.
Glen was born June 28, 1929 to Earnest and Verna (Abel) Petty of Greenhorn, Oregon. His mother came to Baker for his birth. Earnest was a pocket miner and worked the Red Bird and Ophir mines down on Olive Creek. In the winter the family rented a house in Prairie City to be out of the mountains. The family moved to the Willamette Valley when they left the Greenhorns.
Glen loved the mountains surrounding Baker City and Eastern Oregon. Many times he would go prospecting, camping in the mountains with his family and children. Those same mountains called him for hunting with his children, his son Steve, shooting his first deer close to the old area where the family and many friends lived.
In 1943 at the age of 14, Glen joined the Coast Guard/Merchant Marines, lying about his age to enlist. In 1955 he joined the Army Reserves. He received his G.E.D. from Roosevelt High School at the age of 45, later graduating from Portland Community College in Real Estate Law, and Principles and Practices of Psychology. He worked at sawmills and was a real estate broker.
By his first marriage he had twins, Steve and Sheila. Steve passed away in 2006 after being injured in a car accident back in 2001. Sheila lives in Baker City with her son Cody. In 1969 Glen married Dorothy Lou White and had a son, Dennis, while living in Portland, Oregon.
Glen earned the name “Lightnin” from notoriously running the pool table. He belonged to several pool leagues throughout his lifetime, and continued to play pool until he became ill.
Glen was preceded in death by his mother and father, wife Dorothy, son Steven Petty and granddaughter Kayla Petty.
Glen is survived by his daughter Sheila Petty and her son Cody; son Dennis Petty, his wife Trish, daughter Keisha and son Branden Petty; stepson Gary Warden and his children, Anthony, Richard, Justin, and Alexis; stepson Walt Warden and his wife Donna; stepdaughter Vickie Mezo and husband Rick and their children Rickie and Gary Mezo; a special sister-in-law Beulah Roberts and Dell Francis, many beloved great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, sister and brother-in-laws, and lots of friends from Baker and Portland areas.
Glen was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, an avid hunter and gold prospector. He loved the mountains and fishing.

Nancy Vetter
(Sept. 27, 1955-April 18, 2010)

Nancy LaRoy Vetter,  54, a resident of Baker City, Ore., died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.  A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Settler’s Park, 2895 17th Street, Baker City, Ore.
Nancy was born Sept. 27, 1955  in Baker City, to Charles F. and Beatrice Irene (Van Curen) Vetter. She was raised in Baker City and attended school here.  She was a graduate of Baker High School.  Nancy loved the Lord and going to church.  She loved to go to any social gathering, especially if there was good food and  fellowship.  In later years, she loved shopping and caring for her baby doll, Anna.  She was a very sociable person, and everyone she met became a friend.  Nancy loved doing crafts, jigsaw puzzles, beanbag baseball and sing-a-longs at Settler’s where she resided for the past 10 years.  Nancy thoroughly enjoyed church services and Bible studies.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Nancy is survived by her sisters, Antonette Barnes and husband, Roy of Pasco, Wash. and Irene Martin and  husband, Clyde of Vacaville, Calif.;  nephews:  Rodney Barnes and his wife Luana; Michael Barnes and his wife Tammy; Daniel Martin;  niece Stephanie Maffei and her husband Brian.  Two great nephews, 2 great nieces and 1 great great nephew also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice and Charles Vetter and a sister, Darlene Vetter.
