Dennis L. Bales
(Nov. 16, 1945 – Oct. 20, 2007)

Dennis L Bales, 61, died Saturday, Oct, 20, 2007, at Good Shephard Hospital in Hermiston, Ore.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church, 1919 2nd St., Baker City, Ore., on Monday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. followed by a military service at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Dennis was born in Prairie City, Ore., to Robert T. Bales and Lila G. Friedly Bales on Nov. 16, 1945. He attended all 12 years of schooling in Baker City. Dennis had an out going personality, enjoyed playing sports and served one year as student body president. He worked at J.C. Penney while in high school and remained  friends with the manager and co-workers. Dennis attended one year at TVC in Ontario, but then was drafted into the Viet Nam war where he served as a military policeman headquartered  in Saigon. While home on leave in 1966 he married his sweetheart, Rosanna Fenicottero in Payette, Idaho.
After returning from Viet Nam Dennis worked for lumber companies in Payette, Boise, and Portland and then retired from Hughes Payless Lumber company in Hermiston. In the last years of his life one his greatest joys was the arrival of a hummingbird he named Hunny. Each year she returned to build her nest and raise her family. Dennis enjoyed watching her antics such as when she would flutter outside his window until he filled up her feeder. He anticipated her return each year and was quite concerned this year because she arrived a little late.
Dennis enjoyed the love of a second family when on July 6, 1991 he was married to Glenda G. Kloster at the historical St. Peters Catholic Church in The Dalles. She preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 1998. Added to this marriage were 5 step-children, Mark Rogers, Sheri Buschke, Marti Porter, Todd Rogers and Heidi Hug; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A special thanks go to Heidi, Dave, and their 3 children, Samantha, Pamela and Logan for making Dennis their special Dad and Grandpa.
Dennis was also preceded in death by his nephew Kevin Moyes, his parents and his sister Roberta Bard and her husband Wayne.
Survivors include three children from his first marriage, two sons, Dean Bales and Chris Bales and wife Karla of Payette, Idaho; daughter, Colette of Lewiston, Idaho; four grandchildren, Jake Bales, Elijah and Ryan Bales, Tyler Bales and a special person Tammy and her two children; two sisters, Sally Farmer and Patricia Moyes of Baker City; one brother, Darrell Bales and his wife, Bertha also of Baker; nieces, Karen Eck and Kay Patterson; nephews, Kip Farmer, Michael Moyes, Brad and Brian Bales, and Ray Patrick; the Roger's family as mentioned above; special friends, Cari and Fran. The family extends a special thanks to his caregiver Doris Kimbell.
Memorial contributions may be made to The United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to help with his sister Patty Moyes' alternative cancer treatment.
There will be a basket at the church for Patty's fund or contact the family for a mailing address.

In the fall of 1930 she began Nurse’s training in Eugene, Ore. After two years of training she had to quit, because of poor health.
On Aug. 8, 1933, she married Clifford Gross, at the Christian Church in Halfway. They spent their honeymoon at the McBride Guard Station. The next day they walked to the top of Cornucopia Peak where Clifford’s brother, Ellis, was manning the lookout. The next year she and Clifford manned the lookout on Cornucopia Peak. She and Clifford also manned, one summer, the lookout at Trinity.
In 1939 and 1940 they built their home on five acres, in Halfway, given to them by Clifford’s folks. They moved into the house in 1941 and she lived there until she died.
In 1954 Clifford and Marjorie bought the Western Auto store on Main Street in Halfway and ran the store for 18 years. After retiring from the store they did a lot of traveling. When Clifford became sick, Marjorie was very devoted and took care of him until he died.
Marjorie enjoyed picking up her lady friends and taking them to Church, the store and other places they would need to go. She loved to go and read to people that couldn’t read any more.
She had a full and great life and she would always say we shouldn’t complain because we are truly blessed by God.
