Baker County Fire Partners With Marvin Woods For Hazmat Training Exercise

Story and Photos
by Tammy A. Bloom
The Fire Division of Baker County Emergency Management has received an Oregon Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Grant from the State Fire Marshal, and a generous donation from the Randall E. Carpenter Foundation. With both grants, it came to a little over $12,000 to conduct an Over-The-Road/ Industrial HAZMAT Training  Exercise that was held at Marvin Wood Products in Baker City. The purpose of the grant funding is to promote safe and efficient responses to hazardous materials incidents. This year the training also included medical incidents.

The training setting was at Marvin Wood Products with four different scenarios.  Nine different agencies from around Baker County and twenty-one Marvin Wood Products employees participated. The training was a chance to give each group an opportunity to use their own training, and it gave both groups an occasion to interact with each other, and work together.

OTEC Annual Meeting – Board Members Re-Elected, Industrial Electricity Sales Down 26 Percent
La Grande — May 17, 2010 – Oregon Trail Electric Consumers Cooperative’s (OTEC) annual meeting of members was held Saturday, May 15, at the Blue Mountain Conference Center in La Grande.

A large crowd of OTEC members enjoyed live music played by Al “Too Loud” MacLeod’s La Grande area band, “The Ruralites.”  About 65 raffle gifts were given away during the course of the meeting.  The opening door prize, a digital camera, was won by Daniel Harris of Prairie City; the grand prize winner, James and Kathy Turner of Baker City took home a Danby Portable air conditioner.

During the business portion of the meeting, Board President David Baum reflected on what it means to be a part of a cooperative.  In doing so, he commented on how OTEC, a not-for-profit utility, was able to once again return Capital Credits to the membership. He also mentioned the benefits of being a cooperative and how cooperatives focus on the local area they serve.  Specifically, Baum proudly stated that 24 $2000 scholarships were awarded to the youth in OTEC’s service territory.
