Kenneth Howard
(Aug. 30, 1938 - April 18, 2010)

Born on Aug. 30 1938, in Baker, Ore., to Ruth E. Sams and Elbert E. Howard, passed away at his home April 18, 2010, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Eastern Oregon. Kenny was a drywall finisher for more than 30 years after leaving the United States Navy. He was a member of Painters and Tapers Local 487 until his illness caused him to retire in 1994.
Kenny loved camping, fishing and hunting. He loved to have fun and make people laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Diana Howard of Cool, Calif.; son, James J. Howard of Greenwood, Calif.; daughter,  Bridgett J. Howard of Citrus Heights, Calif.; daughter, Tammie K. Lewallyn of Sacramento, Calif.; and daughter, Wendy D. Nickle of Citrus Heights; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings,  Mary, Buzz and Bub; and many other family and friends.
Kenny was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth L. Howard Jr.; brother, Robert K. Howard and his parents, Elbert “Stub” Howard and Ruth Howard.
There was a memorial service held on May 1, at 1 p.m. at Cool Community Church in Cool, Calif. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Prostate Cancer Foundation. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

  

William Stultz
(Dec. 29, 1930-May 25, 2010)
 
William Howard Stultz, 79, died on May 25, 2010, in Vancouver, Wash.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Richland Christian Church on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 11 a.m.. Interment at Eagle Valley Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception to be held following the interment at the Richland Christian Church.
William "Bill" Howard Stultz was born on Dec. 29, 1930, to Lance and Josephine (Todd) Stultz  in Baker, Ore.  He was raised and educated in Baker, graduating in 1949 from Baker High School.   
He met and married Barbara W Graves, on Dec 23, 1951, in Baker City.
Bill lived in several places during his life which included  Arizona, Kennewick, Wash., Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. He worked as a tire man and traveled the world extensively as an inventor of Rubber Railroad Crossings.
Bill enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Carole Lee Clark and Cheryl Lynn Herndon and sons, Darrell Lance Stultz and William Howard Stultz Jr.; brother, Jack Arnold Stultz; sister, Roberta J. Stultz, 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara W. Stultz; brother,  Glen (Buster) Stultz; grandson,  Justin Schouviller; father and mother Lance Arnold Stultz and Josephine Mann and stepfather,  William F. Mann.

Deborah Summers
(July 4,1951-May 22, 2010)

Deborah Sue Summers, 58, passed away May 22, 2010 at her Richland, Ore., home due to kidney cancer. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Presbyterian Church in Halfway, Ore.  Everyone is invited to a reception following the service at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall.
Deborah was born July 4, 1951,  in San Diego, Calif., one of three daughters born to Barbara and Ralph D'Adamo.
She was raised and educated in San Diego before moving to Portland, Ore., in the early 1970's.  After working for a time at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland she started work in September 1973 as a medical assistant in the office of Dr. Gordon W. Summers.  She ultimately became the office manager for this medical/surgical practice which grew to three Physicians and eight employees.
On Oct. 15, 1984, Deborah and Gordon were married on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. They continued with their medical practice at Providence Medical Center in Portland until July 1996 when they retired and moved back to the ranch in Halfway, Ore.
Deborah always had a flair for interior decorating and thus designed and supervised the extensive remodeling process at the Gover-Barton house which they purchased in 1987. She also designed and supervised the remodeling of the home on the Densley ranch in Richland which they purchased in 1995.
In recent years she became a director of the Pine Valley Cemetery District and helped establish a memorial fund. She was instrumental in the building of a gazebo to provide a location map to help people find the gravesites of relatives and loved ones. She was dedicated to further beautify the cemetery with appropriate trees and shrubs.
Her other passion was her own yard, garden and flowers. She spent many hours working in her flower gardens and her greenhouse.  She always took great pride in exhibiting her best flowers at the annual Baker County Fair in Halfway and always brought home many blue ribbons.  She was the Sweepstakes winner for the Floriculture Division for a number of years.
Deborah possessed a very strong sense of family.  She was extremely fond of all her nieces and her nephew.  She never hesitated to offer financial help to each one that wanted to go to college.  Deborah was always very generous. She was a very special person and will be greatly missed.
Deborah is survived by her husband Gordon, sister Julie and husband Jerry Hamilton, nieces Dina and husband Randy Takemoto, Shannon Teagle and daughters Brianna and Ravenna, Eden and husband Jake Walker and son Teagle, Erin and husband Justin King, Kathi and husband Dan Gates and daughters Lauren and Veronica, Angela and husband Michael Taylor and nephew Philip Hamilton and son Elijah.  Her extended family includes step-sisters Frances Yaggie and Dale Laskowitz, step-dad Jack Yaggie, mother-in-law Estella Summers, step-children Jill and husband Jim Crutcher and their children Ellie, Billie and John, Jon Summers and children Charlie and Amanda, and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and older sister Donna.
The family requests memorial contributions in memory of Deborah be made to the Pine Valley Cemetery District Memorial Fund through Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home P.O. Box 543 Halfway, OR 97834.


Carmen West
(July 31, 1938-May 15, 2010)

Carmen Diane West, 72, longtime Baker City resident, died on Saturday, May 15, 2010 in Baker City, Ore. A Private Family Interment was held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Summerville Cemetery.
Carmen Diane West was born on July 31, 1938, at the airport in Baker City, Ore.  She graduated high school in Mt Vernon, Ore. Carmen married Kenneth Wise before she graduated and they made their home on the family ranch in Dayville, Ore.  Later they moved to Izee before moving to Baker in the mid 60s.
Carmen had an array of jobs ranging from bakery worker to accounting to motel/mini storage manager. She loved to travel and loved plants and flowers even though she was allergic to everything under the sun. She moved back to Baker City in the mid 1990's and moved into Settlers Park after she fell and fractured her hip.
Carmen is survived by her brother Monty Thompson and wife Virginia of La Grande, Ore.; daughter, Kathy Bond of Myrtle Creek, Ore.,  Arlene King  and husband Allen of Myrtle Creek; Son David Wise and wife Sharon of Gualala, Calif.; grandchildren,  Deidra Kendra, Joshua Wise, Casey and Dustin King, Cody Bond and great grandchild Gracie King.
Carmen's company was enjoyed by all the lives that she touched. Was one of those special people who were impossible not to like. She will be missed so very much by not only me (son David) but so many other people.

Phyllis Whited-Gibbs
(Jan. 20, 1949-May 26, 2010)

Phyllis Jean Whited-Gibbs, 61, of Haines passed away at her home Wednesday evening, May 26, 2010, after an extended illness.  A celebration of her life will be held at the Frontier in Haines, Ore., at 4p.m. Saturday June 5, 2010.
Phyllis was born on Jan. 20, 1949, in Broken Bow, Neb., to James and Mildred McGinn. Phyllis graduated from Baker High School, Baker City where her family moved in 1965.
Phyllis had a strong work ethic. She spent most of her life working in the service industry. She was a tax preparer, bookkeeper, and business owner. In 1989, she purchased Brew-in-Stein in Baker City.  She owned and operated this business until May of 2009 when it was sold. In 1993, she opened Frontier in Haines. Here she brought in such performers as; John Conlee, Johnny Paycheck, The Haygar Twins, The Diamonds and many local bands.
Phyllis loved children, especially those with that little spark of mischievousness. Her grandchildren brought great joy to her life. She loved spending time with them and creating magical, memorable moments with each one.
She was very active in her community supporting High School rodeo, 4-H, FFA, the local schools and Haines Stampede Rodeo.  Phyllis received numerous community achievement awards.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Sam; three daughters, Tracy Simpson (Chuck) of Enterprise, Ore., Rhonda Page of Baker City, Lisa Whited (Travis) of LaPine, Ore., stepsons, Justin, Jason, and Beau Gibbs, stepdaughter, Tia Gibbs, seven grandchildren: Savana, Lacey, Steven, Tessa, Stephanie, Gracee and Sidney; two brothers, Bill and Don McGinn, a sister, Marie Dillman and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents James and Mildred, her two brothers, Edward and Patrick McGinn, and her nephew, Jeff Dillman.
