Betty Braswell
(Nov. 28, 1947-June 6, 2010)

Betty Helena Braswell, 62, of Baker City, died June 6, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho.
Her memorial service is at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, at the corner of Broadway and Third streets. Betty’s request was that everyone dress casual, and wear bright colors.
A reception will follow at the church. Disposition was by cremation. Gray’s West & Company is in charge of arrangements.
Betty was born Nov. 28, 1947, in Baker City to Charles and Vivian Britton.
She graduated from Baker High School in 1966 and from Eastern Oregon State College (now Eastern Oregon University) in 1970. She married Patrick Braswell on Feb. 14, 1970, in Baker City. Betty taught in Baker schools during the 1970s. In 1981, a car accident left her paralyzed from the shoulders down, but that didn’t slow down her involvement in the community.
She loved cooking, especially mustard, which she sold at the Baker City Farmers Market. Other hobbies over the years included reading, gardening, Scrabble, quilting, sewing, tutoring and raising sheep on their property in Baker Valley.
In recent years, she loved organizing group dinners at Elkhorn Village. She was also active in P.E.O. Chapter CJ, the Baker County Committee on Disabilities and the Baker City Farmers Market board. She was honored as Mother of the Year in 1988.
Survivors include her son, Ed Braswell and his wife, Diane Wroe, of Haines; her daughter, Emily Bryant and her husband, Robert, of Baker City; her brothers, Harold Britton and his wife, Judy, of Hillsboro, and Howard Britton and his wife, Sandee, of Baker City; her sister, Evie Plankinton and her husband, John, of Menlo Park, Calif.; grandchildren, Justin Braswell, Kathleen Braswell, R.J. Bryant, Jordan Bryant, Koda Bryant, Weston Bryant and Mya Bryant; nieces and nephews, Chuck Britton and his wife, Abby, David Britton and his wife, Kristina, Lisa Jacoby and her husband, Jayson, Robin Plankinton, Bryce Britton, and Amy James and her husband, Werner; and her special friends, Connie Howerton and Alice Street.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Vivian.

Robert Allan Hughes
(March 4, 1969-June 4, 2010)
 
Robert Allan “Bob” Hughes, 41, died unexpectedly at his home on Sutton Creek Road on June 4, 2010. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Harvest Church, 3720 Birch St. in Baker City on Saturday, June 26, at 1 p.m.  Doug Connelly will officiate.
Bob was born March 4, 1969, in San Jose, Calif., to Ken and Linda Hughes.  He spent most of his life in Baker County.  After school, Bob’s love for the outdoors took him into the woods where he worked as a logger.  He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and mushroom picking.  But he enjoyed nothing as much as his family and kids.
In June of 1990, he married the love of his life, Jackie Andrews.  Together they had 3 beautiful children, Logan, Amber and Brandon.  Bob was a very passionate man that would do anything for his family and friends.
In 2003, Bob’s life took a turn when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  After many surgeries and battles he returned home to Sutton Creek.  His strength and strong will with God’s help brought him through what most could not endure.  He spent the last 6 years of his life with Jackie, raising his kids and spending time with family and friends.  Bob, husband, father, son and brother you will be dearly missed by all.
Bob was preceded in death by his father Ken Hughes, grandfather Everett Warren and step-brother Paul Opperman.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqualine “Jackie” Hughes, children Logan, Amber and Brandon.  His mother Linda Opperman and step-father, David Opperman of Baker City; grandmother, Betty Lou Warren of Youngstown, Ohio, his brother Tom and family of Baker City, many step-siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.

Jay Hyrum Joseph
(Nov. 27, 1921-May 21, 2010)

Jay Hyrum Joseph, son of Lenora Walker and William Albert Joseph, was born Nov. 27, 1921, at Minersville, Utah. He passed away May 21, 2010, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande, Ore., at the age of 88.
Memorial was held Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the LDS Church in Halfway, Ore.  Services were at   11 a.m. followed by gravesite interment.  A luncheon reception   followed at the LDS Church.
Jay came to Halfway with his brother William (Bill) and family in 1947 at the age of 16.  He worked various jobs to support himself and graduated from High School in Halfway.  He served in the US Navy Armed Guard in WWII from 1942 to 1945.  Then he returned to Halfway working on various ranches and at the Cornucopia mine.
On Nov. 20, 1949, at Baker, Ore., he married Patricia Jean Cahill, daughter of Joseph Leo and Bertha Marie Cahill.
Jay worked at night on the dams and ranched during the day. He was active in his community serving on the Soil Conservation Board, School Board, Cemetery Board, 4-H Livestock leader and counselor at his church.
Jay and Pat were blessed with four children, Steven Joseph of La Grande, Ore.; Carol Marr of Enterprise, Ore.; Lorraine Kay of Olympia, Wash.; and Barbara Dion of Olympia, Wash..  Jay’s love was ranching, hunting and his family.
Jay was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Lorraine Kay and five brothers and sisters.

Harold Slane
(March 1, 1919 - May 28, 2010)
 
Harold Slane, 91, of Richland, Ore., died May 28, 2010, at his home. 
Harold was born March 1, 1919 in Helena, Ark. The family moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1921 and to Portland, Ore., in 1927. He graduated from Benson High School and worked in several service stations as a young man, and on the construction of the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, Ore., in 1935.   He worked for White Motor Company as a mechanic until December 1941 when he enlisted in the Navy.
Harold taught aviation mechanics at Naval Air bases in Norman, Okla., and Beeville, Texas. Harold was married to Leona on May 11, 1947, and they lived in Portland. He was employed in several sales positions and later at Schwinn Bicycle CO. as the Northwest representative. He continued in the business and owned several bicycle shops in the Portland area including Phil’s Schwinn Cyclery on Northeast Broadway from the early 70s to 1994, when he retired at the age of 75. He thoroughly enjoyed owning a small business, and was a member of the Eastside Business Breakfast Club for over 20 years.
Harold moved to Baker City, Ore., in 2008 and later to Richland, Ore., to be closer to his family.   Harold was preceded in death by his wife Leona, sister Mildred Siebert, brother Collin Slane and nephew Al Siebert.
Harold is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Judy and Fred Stewart of Richland, Ore.; granddaughters Jeanette Stewart of Richland Ore., and Stephanie St. Peter of Wilsonville, Ore.; great-grandchildren Cannon and Crystal St. Peter; nieces Mary Karr of Fairview, Ore., and Barb Baker of Bellevue, Wash.;  nephew Rick Slane of Aberdeen, Wash.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Harold will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery.  A private memorial service will be held this summer.
