Georgia Brooks (April 12, 1951 - May 31, 2010)
Georgia Ann Brooks , formerly of Hermiston, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, in Coeur d Alene, Idaho. Where she had lived for the passed 2 years with her daughter Olivia and family. Georgia was born on April 12, 1951, in Baker City, Ore., to Glenn and Olive Wolfe Points. Georgia lived at Haines the first four years until her family moved into Baker City. Georgia attended school in Baker City most of her school years graduating in 1969 from Joseph High School. She lived a short time in Reno, Nev. She then moved to Arlington, Texas, to help her brother with his children. She married and divorced while living in Arlington having one child. She moved to Hermiston Ore., in 1978 and resided there most of 30 years (She lived about a year in The Dalles transferring from the Hermiston Shop N Cart and then moving back.) Georgia moved to Coeur d Alene in 2008 to be near her daughter and family. Georgia enjoyed golf, bingo, crossword puzzles and especially her grandchildren. Georgia is survived by her daughter Olivia and her husband Joe Black; grandchildren: Terrance, Ajiha, and Alex. Sisters: Rosie Carter, Nampa Idaho, Glenda Sather, Ontario, Ore., Hope Phillips, Boardman, Ore., Charlene Murray, Moorcroft, Wyo., 1 Brother: Herb Points, Payette, Idaho. Plus 7 nieces and 12 nephews. Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Dan, Pete, and Gary. Sister Ella Bruner, Two nephews Butchie Bruner and Danny Ray Points. One niece: Mary Murray. A Celebration of Life is planned for sometime in August in Hermiston.
Helen Gover (March 31, 1918 - June 8, 2010)
Helen Clarice Gover, 92, a resident of Halfway, Ore.,, passed away June 8, 2010, in La Grande, Ore. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, on the hillside at the home of George and Marcia Gover in Halfway. A potluck will follow with the family providing ham, baked beans, potato salad, rolls and drinks. Helen was born March 31, 1918, in Baker, Ore., to George and Helen Staight Densley. Helen attended grade school in Baker. Her mother passed away when she was 9 and she stayed with a sister and brother-in-law, Priscilla and Vern Manary to attend school. On weekends, she would go home to her grandparents, W.J. and Maggie Densley in Richland, Ore. Later she attended St. Francis Academy and boarded there through her sophomore year. Helen returned to Richland for her junior and senior years graduating from Eagle Valley High School in 1936. The summer of 1936, Helen was crowned Queen of the Miners’ Jubilee. 50 years later in 1986, Helen was honored to ride again in the Miners’ Jubilee Parade. On Oct. 5, 1936, Helen married Wilford Lovell Gover, Jr., in Baker, Oregon and made their home in Halfway. They made a living by farming, working hard, raising cattle, milking cows and putting up hay for themselves and others. Horseback was a way of life and something that Helen truly enjoyed. In the spring and during haying season, a tractor became her best friend and she spent many hours in the driver’s seat. It was nothing for Helen to cook for 10 hay men and be back in the field working as soon as the dishes were done. Helen served on the Voting Committee for 50 years. She helped establish the first hot lunch program for the Halfway Grade school. She was instrumental in starting the annual talent show with the proceeds going to help pay for school programs. She was a member of the Baker County Cow Belles. Helen served on the Pine Eagle Clinic Board for 9 years being chairperson for 3. She also served on the Pine Valley Cemetery Board for many years. Helen belonged to the local Bridge club for over 50 years and actively attended until her eye sight began to fail. Her favorite place to vacation was Jackpot, Nev. She loved to go and usually came home a winner. Helen is survived by her sons Daniel and wife Joyce of Enterprise, Ore.; Gary and wife Mary of La Grande, Ore., and George and wife Marcia of Halfway, Ore. Seven grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter born June 4, 2010, and her nephew Tom Pearce. Fairy Hammerberg (May 29, 1923 - May 16, 2010)
Fairy Maybell Hammerberg, 86, died at St. Elizabeth Care Center on May 16, 2010. At the families request there will be no service. Fairy was born May 29, 1923, in Stonewall, Ark., to Bill and Mary (Trotter) Keys. She was home schooled. Her first husband was Roy Mitts. She later married Dick Hammerberg. Fairy was a homemaker and she cleaned houses professionally. Fairy loved fishing, crochet, sewing and gardening, she had quite the green thumb. She loved raising her children and making people happy and was a great money manager. Fairy was preceded in death by her parents,11 brothers and sisters, 3 children, Gail Mitts, Wayne Mitts and Donald Mitts, her first husband Roy Mitts and her second husband Dick Hammerberg. She is survived by 5 children, Jerry Mitts of Haines, Ore., Janet Mitts of Richland, Wash., Donna Hardy of Richland, Wash., Bert Mitts of Spokane, Wash., Lori Davis of Astoria, Ore., and 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Robert Allan Hughes (March 4, 1969-June 4, 2010) Robert Allan “Bob” Hughes, 41, died unexpectedly at his home on Sutton Creek Road on June 4, 2010. A Celebration of Life potluck dinner will be held at the Harvest Church, 3720 Birch St. in Baker City on Saturday, June 26, at 1 p.m. Pastor Monte Loyd will officiate. Bob was born March 4, 1969, in San Jose, Calif. to Ken and Linda Hughes. He spent most of his life in Baker County. After school, Bob’s love for the outdoors took him into the woods where he worked as a logger. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and mushroom picking. But he enjoyed nothing as much as his family and kids. In June of 1990, he married the love of his life, Jackie Andrews. Together they had three beautiful children, Logan, Amber and Brandon. Bob was a very passionate man that would do anything for his family and friends. In 2003, Bob’s life took a turn when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After many surgeries and battles he returned home to Sutton Creek. His strength and strong will with God’s help brought him through what most could not endure. He spent the last six years of his life with Jackie, raising his kids and spending time with family and friends. Bob, husband, father, son and brother, you will be dearly missed by all. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Ken Hughes; grandfather, Everett Warren; and step-brother, Paul Opperman. He is survived by his wife, Jacqualine “Jackie” Hughes; children, Logan, Amber and Brandon; his mother, Linda Opperman and step-father, David Opperman of Baker City; grandmother, Betty Lou Warren of Youngstown, Ohio, his brother Tom and family of Baker City, many step-siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews. Wayne Welch (Nov. 21, 1916 - June 7, 2010)
Wayne Lester Welch, 93, of Baker City, died at Meadowbrook Retirement & Residential Care Facility on June 7, 2010. At Wayne’s request there will be no services. There will be a private celebration of his life later, Wayne was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Wellfleet, Neb., to Delbert Webster and Clara Beth Cooper Welch. He grew up on a farm in Nebraska. After graduating from Logan County High School, he joined the Navy where he spent four years. He returned to Nebraska where he married Idris (Dillon) Welch on March 8, 1941. They lived on a farm in Nebraska until they moved to Vernonia, Ore., in 1952. Wayne worked for the school district becoming a maintenance supervisor for the four schools. He retired from there after 27 years. Wayne started playing a saxophone in his early teen years. He played for many dances in Nebraska and still loved to play until a few months ago. Wayne loved to hunt and fish. He also did wood carvings for a hobby. Wayne and Idris moved to Baker City in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Idris; sons, Larry and wife Lorna Welch of Zeballos, BC., Ronald and wife Sandy Welch of Vernonia, Ore., Leon (Shorty) Welch of Richland, Ore., Darwin and wife Linda Welch of Vernonia, Ore.; daughters, Darlene and husband Bryan McLeod of Vernonia, Ore., and Gayle and husband Clifford Yokley of Atwater, Calif.; one sister, Betty Zufall of Loudenville, Ohio and also a sister-in-law Toni Welch of Fresno, Calif.; twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
