Elaine R. Campbell (Sept. 22, 1926 – Nov. 4, 2007)
Elaine R. Campbell 81, of Baker City, Ore., passed away Nov. 4, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Care Center. Funeral services were held at Coles Funeral Home, Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at 2 p.m., visitation was Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, from 12 p.m.to 7 p.m. at Coles Funeral Home. Pastor Ray Hedlund officiated. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception at the home of Tim and Dana Rutter, at 4 p.m. Elaine was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Mattoon, Ill., to Lewis O. and Claire Tracy. She was the youngest of four children. As a child, the family lived in Ohio and Wyoming. While a teenager, she moved with her family to Baker, Ore., where she graduated from Baker High School in 1944. On May 5, 1946 she married Lester Rutter, in Baker, Ore. They had five children, Victor, Timothy, Valerie, Calvin, and Cameron. Valerie died as an infant in 1955. Lester was employed with Pacific Northwest Bell as a lineman. Lester tragically died in September 1961, in a vehicle accident while on a hunting trip, leaving her to raise four young sons, no easy task. After Lester’s death, Elaine worked for several years in La Grande, Ore., at “The Wheel” restaurant. She then went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell in Baker as a telephone switchboard operator. When the switchboard in Baker was automated, she moved to Boise, Idaho, where she continued to work for U.S. West until retirement. While living in Boise after retirement. She became reacquainted with a friend from high school, Elton Campbell, who was living in Florida after his retirement from the U.S. Air Force. Always fond of each other’s company, they were married on Sept. 3, 1977 in Reno, Nev. They continued to live in Shalimar, Fla., where Elton was a family attorney. Elaine felt she had “found paradise”. Elton and Elaine were happily married until Elton passed away in 1992, after a long battle with cancer. Elaine was treated successfully twice for cancer. After Elton’s death, Elaine moved back to Baker City. She bought a home and lived with her youngest son, Cameron, until she moved to Meadowbrook Place in September 2005. She became ill in October 2007 and lived for a short time at St. Elizabeth Care Center, until her death. Elaine was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great sense of humor, and in her younger days loved to play golf, enjoyed cooking and sewing, singing, and was always active. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, reading, crossword puzzles, and just visiting. She had a special fondness for her cat, “Miss Kitty”. Elaine is survived by her son Tim and his wife Dana of Baker City, Ore.; grandchildren, Sean Christy of Beaverton, Ore., and Sarah Meyer of Jesup, Iowa; great-grandchildren Makenzie and Kaitlyn Christy, Jordan and Jasmine Meyer; her loving son Cameron, of Baker City, Ore.; sister, Juanita Shapland of Fossil, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Robert, a sister Vivian, a daughter Valerie, first husband Lester, second husband Elton, and sons Victor and Calvin Rutter. Bruce Jacks (May 22, 1924 – Nov. 4, 2007)
Bruce Jacks 83, died on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007 at Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville, Idaho, surrounded by his family. A Funeral Service was held Friday, Nov. 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church. Gordon Bond of the Richland Christian Church officiated the service. Interment at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Friends joined the family for a reception that was held following the interment at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Bruce Corbit Jacks was born to Walter and Lena Jacks on May 22, 1924 on the family ranch at Willow Creek near Paddock Lake in Idaho. He spent a lot of his younger years at his Granddad’s ranch. He rode his horse to school, which was a one-room schoolhouse near Midvale where he graduated from the 8th grade. He was drafted into the Army Air Corp in 1943. He served three years in the radar and the motor pool, serving in Japan, New Guinea and the Philippines. While in New Guinea, Bruce, a down home country boy was introduced to international cuisine. He was given a meal and he showed himself to a nice place to dine under a coconut palm. While eating his meal all of a sudden Plop! Plop! Looking down in his plate, wonderfully crunchy long white worms were added to his meal! This dish became known as pick and flick, a wonderful delicacy! After that experience, Bruce became strictly a steak and potatoes guy! Bruce was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned home where he met and married his true love Edith Dunn. They were married in Payette, Idaho on Aug. 18, 1947. They were blessed with five beautiful daughters and they had extra love to share with several foster children also. Bruce had many, many jobs while living all over the Northwest. But the job that he loved the most was driving logging trucks. Even in his later years, he would still dream of driving. Though he was never monetarily wealthy, he was a rich man in many ways. Through he was a hardworking man; he found a little time for some hobbies, which included hunting, fishing and woodworking. Bruce leaves behind five daughters Linda Kent of Kamiah, Idaho, Ida and husband Ron Jordan of Emmett, Idaho, Donna Seyer and husband David of Grangeville, Idaho, Janet Jacks of Burns Junction, Ore., Rosilyn Jacks of Burns Junction, Ore., seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; sister Susie and her husband Bill Stephens of Lewiston, Idaho. Oren C. Jordan (July 8, 1916 - Nov. 8, 2007)
Oren C. Jordan, 91, of Baker City died Nov. 8, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Health Services. At his request, there will be no funeral service. Oren was born July 8, 1916, in Baker City to Clifford and Julia Craig Jordan. He was the youngest of there children, a sister Ruth and a brother Craig, preceded him in death, as did both his parents. Oren attended Baker Schools, Oregon Normal School at Monmouth, Ore., and the University of Oregon where he earned his teachers certificate and Bachelor of Science degree. Oren taught school where he made a difference in the lives of some of his students by working them successfully through subjects they had problems with. One boy, who could not seem to understand math, learned with Oren’s help and went on to a full career with NASA in Florida. After several years teaching in many locations, Newbridge, Gilchrist, Eugene and Muddy Creek, Oren moved back to Baker City to work at the Post Office until his retirement. He served in the Army from June 1945 to August 1946 at Holabird Signal Depot, Maryland, where he studied counter intelligence and methods of investigative reports becoming an instructor to teach military personnel military intelligence until he was discharged at the end of the war. On Sept. 4, 1941, Oren married his wife of 66 years, Alberta Ebell. Oren is survived by his wife Alberta; two sons: Michael D. Jordan and his wife Judi, and Jerry L. Jordan and his wife Christine; four grandchildren: Jennifer Jordan, Dr. Jeffrey Jordan and his wife Marcy, Lyle Jordan and Amy Estergard and her husband Michael; two step-grandchildren: Claire and Sarah DeNoy; and two great grandchildren: Lucy Ellen Estergard and Caelyn Terese Jordan. Norman Koopman (Oct. 1, 1925 – Nov. 6, 2007)
Norman Koopman, 82, of Halfway Ore., passed away peacefully with family by his side on Nov. 6, 2007, in La Grande, Ore. A Celebration of Norm’s Life will be held this next spring with a gathering of family, friends and a picnic. Date, time and place to be announced. Norm was born Oct. 1, 1925, to Charles and Esther Koopman of Halfway. He spent most of his career teaching Vocational Agriculture at La Grande and Pine Eagle High Schools before retiring in 1993. Once retired he and wife Jewel enjoyed winters on the Southern Oregon Coast and summers in Halfway. Norm was an avid gardener and never missed an opportunity to play a good round of golf. He was active with the Baker County Weed Board. Norm taught the 55 Alive Driving program through 2006. He was a teacher of teachers and will be missed by many. Norm is survived by his wife, Jewel of 57 years; son, Rod and wife, Deb of La Grande, and son, Ron and wife, Sherri of Portland. He was the proud grandfather of 5; Mahlon Koopman and Michael Koopman of Portland, Kelly Koopman of La Grande, Travis Koopman of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Melissa Earl of Gresham. Kerry Logsdon (June 13, 1966-Nov. 11, 2007)
Kerry Lyle Logsdon passed away at his home in Milwaukie, Ore., on Nov. 11, 2007, surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long and courageous battle with congenital heart disease. All family and friends are invited to the celebration of Kerry’s life to be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at the Elks Lodge in Baker City, Ore., from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Kerry was born on June 13, 1966, in Baker City, Ore., where he graduated high school in 1984. Kerry worked with his dad in construction and then began his own construction company. Even near his death, Kerry was full of life and his smile glowed with every precious moment and he made it known that the most important thing was the love for his family and life. He is survived by his wife, Dotti; sons, Ethan, Gabe, and Kyle, mother Carol and husband, Andy Arstein of Baker City, Ore.; father Howard and wife Judy Logsdon of Salem, Ore.; sister, Kimberly Logsdon, Rapid City, S.D.; brother, Kevin and wife Marilyn Logsdon of Baker City, Ore.; grandmother, Margorie Fritz, Ontario, Ore.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kerry was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Maurice Fritz and Joseph Logsdon, and grandmother, Leona Medlin. Auburene M. O’Neil (May 28, 1914-Nov. 10, 2007)
Auburene M. O’Neil, 93, went home to be with the Lord, Nov. 10, 2007. She spent the last two months of her life at St. Elizabeth Care Center where she received loving care from the nurses and staff. Visitation will be held at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 from 2 to 8 p.m. A Graveside service will be held at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland, Ore., on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at 11 a.m. Pastor Mel Harris of the First Lutheran Church in Baker City will officiate. A memorial in celebration of her life will be held in the spring of 2008, so more family members and friends can attend. Date, place and time to be announced in the future. Auburene was born May 28, 1914 in Newbridge, Ore., to Mathias Welter, and Mary A. Wright McCormick Welter. She graduated from Eagle Valley High School in Richland, Ore., in 1932 and married Vernon H. O’Neil Aug. 30, 1934. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Baker City. In High School, she played on the girl’s basketball team and was known as “Buddy Welter” by all her friends. She loved going camping in the mountains, and enjoyed taking her grandchildren and their friends to the cabin that she and her husband owned during the grandchildren’s growing-up years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vernon O’Neil; sisters: Marguerite (Welter) Compton, Caroline (Welter) Campbell, Florence (McCormick) Thompson, and infant sister Auytanum McCormick; brothers: Clarence McCormick, Kenneth McCormick, infant Charles McCormick, and three infant Welter baby boys; 10 much loved nieces and nephews; and all of her cousins, aunts and uncles. She is survived by daughters; Sherrill and husband Tom Bunch, Enterprise, Ore., Patricia and husband Larry Munkres, Aloha, Ore., and son Greg O’Neil and partner Deana Miller, Monroe, Wisc.; Grandchildren: Kristi (Bunch) and spouse David Zweifel, Kelly (Bunch) and spouse Randy Benjamin, Tom T. Kenneth Schuchardt (Sept. 1933 – Nov. 2, 2007)
Kenneth D. Schuchardt, 74, of McMinnville, Ore., a former longtime Baker County resident, died Nov. 2, 2007, at the Willamette Valley Medical center in McMinnville. He had lived at Oakwood Country Place care home for almost a year before entering the hospital. Arrangements for cremation will be by Crown Memorial Center in Tualatin. At his request, there will be no funeral. Ken was born in September 1933 at Oakdale, Neb., to Raymond and Ada Schuchardt. His family moved to Oregon when he was small. He was barber at Lafayette for several years and then moved to Sumpter. He operated Ken’s Barber Shop on Broadway in Baker City for many years. He was also co-owner with Roxanna in a second-hand store on Broadway Street. He served in the U.S. Air Force and spent four years in the military during the Korean War. His hobbies were hunting and fishing and he would spend all his extra time outdoors when he was not working. He loved to cut his own firewood and roam the mountains around Sumpter and Baker City. He was a member of the American Legion at McMinnville and Baker City. he was loved by almost everyone who knew him and they loved his smile. He will be greatly missed by those who really loved him and the great friends he made through the years, his family said. Survivors include three sisters and a brother, Geraldine Lasniewski and her husband, Ray, of Turner, Donna Dillin, of Vancouver, Wash., Gerald Schuchardt of Junction City, and Karen Carmichael and her husband, Carl, of Hillsboro; his life time partner, Roxanna “Rocky” Schuchardt of Sheridan, and her children, Terry Victoria and family of Dundee, Kerry Douglas and family of Nampa, Idaho, Laurie Morris and family of Colorado Springs, Colo., Marlene Phillips and family of Portland, Jonni Maben and family of Newberg, and Skip Davis of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; mother, Ada; twin brother, Keith, who was also a barber in Baker City; and a son, David Schuchardt.

Stanley Gene Willcock (Oct. 13, 1935 – Nov. 8, 2007)
Stanley Gene Willcock, 72, a longtime resident of Baker City, Ore., passed away Nov. 8, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Care Center in Baker City. At his request, there will be no services. His cremated remains will be placed with his mother’s remains at a later date. Stanley Gene was born Oct.13, 1935, in La Grande, Ore., to Claude Russell and Juanita Anne (Spencer) Willcock. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Willcock in 1969 and Juanita Willcock in 1997; brother-in-law, Claudino Padilla in 2005. Stanley is survived by his sister, Yvonne Padilla of Medford, Ore.; brother, Wayne Willcock and his wife, Mary of Florence, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.
