(May 23, 1915 – Nov. 14, 2007)

Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Levinger, 92, of Baker City, Ore., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Care Center in Baker City.
She was born May 23, 1915, in Imboden, Ark. In 1927, after a fire destroyed the Wilson Mercantile Store, the family moved to Santa Cruz, Calif., where her oldest brother resided. She was employed in San Francisco as a merchandising manager for the Gallencamp Shoe Company. In 1944 she married Henry Levinger, and after the war they returned to Baker to run the Levinger Drug Store. They had two sons, Larry and Roger.
She was a lifetime member of the hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration, and Oregon Trail Regional Museum.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; son, Roger; sister, Frances; brothers, Henry, Lester, and Alvin.
She is survived by her son, Larry;  four grandchildren, Amy, Matthew, Jeffrey and Bradley.

Robert Raleigh
(May 12, 1922 – Nov. 14, 2007)

Robert Joseph Raleigh, 85, a former longtime Burns, Ore., resident passed away Nov. 14, 2007, peacefully at his home in Baker City, Ore.
A Vigil service was held at 7 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 19, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Burns.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday., Nov. 20, at the Holy Family Catholic Church followed by interment at the Burns City Cemetery.  Father Francis Ekwugha of Burns, Ore., and Father Thomas Scanlon of Bend, Ore., officiated. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception at the church after the burial.
Robert Joseph was born in Stratford, Wisconsin May 12, 1922, to Arthur and Francis (Schoenfuss) Raleigh. Robert had 7 brothers and 1 sister. As a child, Robert and his family moved to Brantwood, Wisc., where he spent the rest of his childhood. Mr. Raleigh graduated from high school at the age of 16 and entered the Civilian Conservation Corps for the next two tears. Mr. Raleigh enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served as a medic in the 96th infantry (the Dead Eyes) and served 30 months in the Pacific theatre, mainly on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Upon returning to the States at the end of the war, he spent 13 months at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. for war related injuries. He was honorably discharged from the army at the completion of his medical needs.
Mr. Raleigh returned to Brantwood to work with his father and brothers, dairy farming and logging the North Woods of Wisconsin. He and his brother Dick traveled to Roy, Mont., where they secured seasonal work on a horse ranch. They returned to Wisconsin at the end of the work season. Mr. Raleigh returned to Montana the following year. He utilized the GI bill to attend college at Montana State College (now Montana State University) and earned a bachelor’s degree in Range Management in 1951.  Mr. Raleigh married Beverly Jean Drew in Butte, Mont., on Dec. 28, 1953. They moved to Logan, Utah where Robert completed a Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry followed by a doctorate PhD in Animal Science 1959; while in Logan, 4 of his seven sons were born.
Dr. Raleigh and his family moved to Burns, Ore., in January 1960, where he went to work as a research scientist at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Station jointly operated by Oregon State University and the United Sates Department of Agriculture. Dr. Raleigh became superintendent of the Burns and Union Oregon faculties in 1969. During the course of his tenure as a research scientist Dr. Raleigh was honored with the Earl Price award from the School of Agriculture at Oregon State University for Research contributions to Oregon agriculture in 1980. He was also awarded the Western Section Distinguished Service Award in 1980 by the American Society of Animal Science. Dr. Raleigh resigned his position of superintendent to pursue opportunities in research in 1984. He retired form this position in 1988 at Burns, Ore.; 3 more sons were born at Burns.
Dr. and Mrs. Raleigh lived in the Burns community from 1960 – 1997.  During the time that he lived in Burns, Dr. Raleigh became involved in many aspects of church, school, and community. He was a member of the Baker Diocese until his death in 2007 and a member of Holy Family Parish from 1960- 1997. Dr. Raleigh was very active in the parish and diocese. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, parish council, parish finance committee and was a Eucharistic minister. In 1989, Dr. Raleigh was awarded the first Diocesan award ever given for outstanding service to church and community by Baker Diocese Bishop Thomas Connolly.  Dr. Raleigh was able to attend Bishop Connolly’s 60th Anniversary as a priest ceremony in Baker City, Oregon in October 2007, where Bishop Connolly thanked him for his dedication to the Diocese Pastoral Council.
Dr. Raleigh was a lifetime member of the Elks and the VFW. He served on the Burns Grade School Board, the Burns Union High School Board, and the Burns City Council. Dr. Raleigh was a little league coach, a Boy Scout leader, and a contributing community member to many youth activities in Harney County.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Beverly, his mother and father, his brothers, Ronald, Richard, and Daniel; nephew, Michael.
He is survived by his 7 sons, David and Claudia of Corvallis, Ore., Stephen of Baker City, Ore., Thomas and Kelly of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Michael of Portland, Ore., Mark and Maria of Portland, Ore., Daniel and Michelle of Vancouver, Wash., and John and Cathy of Springfield, Ore.; 19 grandchildren; brothers, Patrick of Goebels, Minn., James of Brantwood, Wisc., Arthur of Prentice, Wisc., David of Prentice, Wisc.; sister, Mary Ann Boehm of Cummberland, Wisc.; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Burns High School Memorial Fund in care of Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR  97814.
