Duane Cassidy
(May 21, 1916 - Jan. 5, 2012)

Duane A. Cassidy, 95, passed away Jan. 5 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center.  His memorial service was held at the Presbyterian Church, Baker City, Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., with the reception following at the church. The service will be led by Pastor Katy Haliburton.
Duane was born in Havre, Mont.,  May 21, 1916 to Florence and Jack Cassidy. His childhood years were spent in southern Idaho where his folks were in farming and ranching.  He moved to Bly, Ore., in 1938 and was employed by the Ivory Pine Lumber Company until Dec. 8, 1941.  He enlisted in the Army Aircorp the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed.  During World War II he flew 24 missions in B17s before being shot down over Germany. Wounded, he spent time in a German prison camp, was a prisoner of war until being liberated in May of 1945.  Duane received numerous military service decorations, including the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Medal.
After the war he returned to Klamath Falls where he married Martha Jane Givan, June 29, 1945.  Married for 66 years, they had four sons, Larry, Garry, Kelly and Buzz, who were at his side when he passed away.
Duane worked for nearly 40 years for Ellingson Lumber Company, first at Klamath Falls, then moving to Baker in 1963.  He retired at age 68.  Very active in community service, he enjoyed participating on the Klamath Volunteer Fire Department, Baker City Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Baker 5J School District, and Baker County Budget Committee.  His family centered activities included Boy Scouts as Scoutmaster and being both a Little League and Babe Ruth baseball coach.  Duane's interests included hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and all things outdoors.  On their Salmon Creek ranch where they lived for 35 years, he pursued his passions of carpentry, woodworking and gardening.  He was a champion for education all his life reading newspapers, magazines, books on the west and war history.  Duane was also a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church, Masons, and the Shiners.
Duane is survived by his wife Martha Jane, sons Larry, Garry, Kelly, and Buzz.  Grandchildren are Kevin, Chris, Brian, Laci, Amber, Kyle, and Mickey.  There are also 7 great grandchildren.
Coles Tribute Center is in charge of the arrangements and memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Shiners' Children's Hospital through Coles here in Baker.


Avis Corley
(July 25, 1929-Dec 30, 2011)

Avis Ann (Wirth) Corley, 82, died Dec. 30, 2011 in Baker City, Ore.  A memorial service will be held Jan. 14, 2012, 2 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Baker City, Ore.
Avis was born July 25, 1929 to Lloyd James Wirth and Sarah Ester Reed Graham in Bend, Ore. Avis married Shellie Elmo Corley Dec. 21, 1949 in Montesano, Greys Harbor, Wash.  She was employed with Jones Truck Line driving 18-wheelers with her husband.  She also worked at the Baker County Library driving the Book Mobile.  
Her hobbies included beading; reading; drawing; gardening; playing Pinochle with her friends, and attending various events her grandchildren were involved in.  Avis was affiliated with the Baker City Calvary Baptist Church.  Her children say she was “The best mom ever.”  She will be greatly missed.
Avis is survived by, 3 sons, Patrick Raymond Corley of Baker City, Ore.; Randy Eugene Corley of Earp, Calif.; David Edwin Corley of Newalla, Okla.; 2 daughters, Sally Ann Schuh of Baker City, Ore., and JoAnn Marie Hefner of Union, Ore; one step-son Larry Corley of Tillamook, Ore., and 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her Husband Shellie Elmo Corley who passed Aug. 11, 1991; and her eldest daughter Sandra Sue Colson.
Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel is in charge of these arrangements.

 
‘Tim’ Silven
(Oct. 22, 1952 - Jan. 2, 2012)

Timothy Carl “Tim” Silven, 59, a resident of San Antonio Palopo, Guatemala, and Baker City, Ore.,  died in Guatemala on Jan. 2, 2012 as a result of injuries suffered in motor vehicle accident. Tim was born on Oct. 22, 1952 and was raised in Baker City by his parents, David C. and Kathleen D. Silven.
He attended St. Francis Academy until its closure and graduated from Baker High School. Tim was a Private Investigator for several Law offices in the Eastern Oregon area. He loved the outdoors, kayaking off the coast of Baja, hiking in the Utah National Parks, exploring ruins in Guatemala and Mexico or just relaxing at the family cabin on Eagle Creek. He always documented his adventures with amazing photos. His passion for music was lifelong from a small boy with his electric guitar that, when played, the whole neighborhood would hear. He loved sharing his music with others and he encouraged many to honor the music inside them. Tim’s love for life and adventure, his gusto and generosity of spirit, were strong. He inspired many. Tim touched many lives and he will be missed by his family and many devoted friends. Home to Tim was always the Baker Valley.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Kay Silven. Survivors include a son Kantner Silven of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters Patti Hanley (Bill) of Baker City, Ore.; and Mardi Diouf of Portland, Ore.; brother Andy Silven (Wendy) of Albany, Ore.; best friend Debbie Friedman of Baker City, Ore.; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Catholic funeral service was held in San Antonio Palopo, Guatemala with interment above Lake Atitlan, one of Tim’s favorite places.


H. Wendell Weaver
(April 20, 1940 - Jan. 5, 2012)

H. Wendell Weaver, 71, of Boise, Idaho and formerly of Baker, died on Jan. 5, 2012 of lung cancer.
Wendell was born in Nampa, Idaho,  on April 20, 1940, to Harry and Elizabeth Weaver. They lived in Caldwell, ID until his family – including sisters Carol, Karen, and Connie – moved to Baker in  1946. He attended grades 1-6 at North Baker, and 7-8 grades at Baker Junior High. He was active in Boy Scouts, church activities, and had several paper routes. An outgoing and adventuresome boy, Wendell played baseball in the neighbor’s yard (breaking at least one window), skated on frozen garden rinks in winter near the family home at 8th and Campbell Streets, and enjoyed riding his bicycle throughout the town.
Although Wendell missed his Baker friends, he was excited to move to the big city of Boise in 1954. He graduated from Boise High School in 1958, Boise Junior College, and University of Washington with a degree in communications. He spent most of his adult life working in insurance, building and remodeling homes, and refinishing furniture.
He retired from AAA Idaho to work full time at Shabby Attic Furniture that he and his wife Shirley owned in Boise.
Wendell was predeceased by his parents, sisters Judy (1943) and Karen (Jim) Smith (2001), and son Gregory Wendell (1962). He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, daughter Wendy Sue (Kevin) Folsom of Spokane, son Tim (Laura) of Portland, three stepdaughters of Boise, sisters Carol (Don) Thompson of Pendleton and Connie Weaver of Boise, and brother-in-law Jim Smith of Anchorage, AK. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services were held in Boise.
