When Moses Passed Away, What Age Was He?

Deuteronomy 34:7 states that Moses was 120 years old when he died, but his “eyes were not feeble nor his vigor gone.” What was Moses’ secret to longevity? How, then, did Moses keep his youthful vigor and power even after reaching the ripe old age of 120?

The forty years of Moses’ life can be broken down into three distinct segments. Acts 7:23 states that for the first forty years of Moses’ life, he was treated as a member of the royal family of Egypt. After making the decision to support Israel’s cause rather than Egypt’s, Moses spent the next forty years of his life in exile (Acts 7:30).

Moses lived for another forty years after he returned to Egypt to rescue the Hebrew slaves (Acts 7:36). This means that Moses spent forty years as a prince, forty years as a shepherd in exile, and then another forty years as the leader of a nation of emancipated slaves.

You might assume that Moses’s experience as a prince in Egypt for forty years would have equipped him to lead Israel during its forty years of wandering in the wilderness. However, God also intended for Moses to develop a modest character. As a shepherd for forty years, Moses learned to be dependent on the Lord and to be humble.

It is written in Numbers 12:3, “Now Moses was a very modest man, more humble than anybody else on the face of the earth.” Moses was well-equipped to lead Israel thanks to the eighty years of his life he spent learning and growing in various roles of responsibility. But it was Moses’s personal relationship with God that made him such a strong and virtuous leader (Exodus 33:11).

Even though he lived to be 120 years old, Moses did not pass away from old age. Despite the fact that on Moses’ day, the average longevity was significantly lower than 120, this is what happened.

how old was moses when he died

The extraordinary protection and rejuvenation that Moses had received from God had ended, and he had to die because God had finished with him what He had begun. The Israelites had been led by Moses to the edge of the Promised Land after God had freed them from slavery in Egypt, given them God’s Law, and led them out of Egypt.

The Lord did not permit Moses to enter the Promised Land with the Israelites because he did not obey him in Numbers 20:1-12. When the time came for the Israelites to enter and take possession of the land, Moses went to the summit of Mount Nebo to survey it from above; the Lord then carried him back to heaven (Deuteronomy 34:1–7). A disciple of God is “Indestructible” until God’s plan for him or her is finished, much like Moses was for 120 years.

When Moses Passed Away, What Became of His Body?

Due to the increasing awe in which Moses was held, it was deemed crucial that the Jews stop their unsuccessful search for his body. Since this is the case, the phrase “no man knoweth of his sepulcher unto this day” makes perfect sense. Moses existed only in myth and tradition; he never existed in the real world.

Even more, telling is the phrase “till this day,” which suggests the account was written long after the time that Moses was thought to have lived. Further evidence that the book was written after Israel became a nation can be found in Deuteronomy 34:10:
