After being taken to a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, for treatment of a “personal health condition” at home, Mississippi State University’s head coach passed away suddenly on Monday evening.

The reason for his death was “complications from a heart condition,” according to the school’s statement. There was a complete lack of follow-up details.

To what end did Mike Leach become famous?

Before becoming the head coach at Texas Tech in 2000, Leach spent the first ten years of his career as an assistant coach at several colleges. Known as the “father of the Air Raid” tactic, he was the first to use a passing-oriented strategy. Several college heads coaches currently employ this offensive strategy.

Leach acquired the head coaching position at Washington State in 2012 after a successful decade at Texas Tech, where he posted an 84-43 record. For eight years overall, until transferring to Mississippi State in 2020.

In 2021, he would go 7-6, and in 2022, he would improve to 8-4. He was in the midst of final preparations for the ReliaQuest Bowl when the school disclosed his health issue.

On December 11, 2022, for reasons that have yet to be revealed, Mike Leach was admitted to the hospital. Mike suffered a huge heart attack and didn’t get medical assistance for 10-15 minutes, reporter Ross Dellinger said that evening, putting Mike’s condition in the highest category of “critical.”

He claims that Mike’s brain injury was brought on by a seizure disorder. Health problems led to his death on December 12, 2022, at the age of 61, in the hospital.

He has taken his teams to 19 bowl games in his 21 years as a head coach, and his teams have won at least nine games seven times. In his third year at the helm, 2022, Leach guided Mississippi to an 8-4 record.
