In November 2011, after three years into their marriage, Ruben Studdard filed for divorce from Surata Zuri McCants. Their divorce was finally formalized two months later, in January 2012.
A prenuptial agreement between the “American Idol” winner and his ex-wife was upheld despite McCants’ initial attempts to have it invalidated on the grounds that Studdard surprised her with it just days before they said, “I do.”
As a result, McCants had almost nothing to show for her years-long marriage. According to a TMZ article from April 2012, McCants said that the prenuptial agreement was unlawfully forced onto her, but their court did not believe her.
Studdard was not obligated to pay McCants any alimony or spousal support, according to court records that were made public after the decision was reached. Additionally, child support was not a factor because the two did not have any children together.
Studdard was also permitted to retain ownership of their house and all of his possessions, including his jewels, pensions, royalties, wardrobe, and all of his money.
