One of the most adored sci-fi film series of all time, Predator features an iconic monster that is both horrifying and iconic in pop culture. Since humans have long dominated the planet, it seemed inevitable that a 7-foot-tall extraterrestrial threat stalking the top action stars in Hollywood would garner a lot of media attention.

Since the 1987 smash blockbuster Predator, the Predator franchise has gone through many crossovers and ups and downs, but it has remained a must-have selection in every sci-fi fan’s movie library.

The Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, served as the catalyst for a number of movies, books, comic books, computer games, and toys that are still in demand today. Three direct sequels and two cross-over movies with the competing Alien franchise resulted from it.

While none of the follow-up films had the same level of commercial success as the 1984 blockbuster, they all dug deeper into the Yautja lore, transforming the race from a sentient, technologically advanced space horror to an intelligent foe that occasionally cooperates with humans and occasionally treats those they deem deserving of some respect.

In 2022, the Predator film series will make a comeback by going into the past. Prey narrates the tale of a teenage warrior named Naru and is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years in the past. Naru must rely on her abilities and whatever weapons she may discover to battle the “highly evolved” extraterrestrial predator that threatens to exterminate her people. John Davis and John Fox, the film’s producers, spoke with Collider about their endeavor in July. Davis stated at the time:

“Prey returns to the core elements that made the first Predator movie successful. It’s the creativity of a person who doesn’t give up, who can watch and interpret, and who can, in general, overcome a stronger, more capable, and well-armed army.”

On August 5, 2022, the prequel Prey will debut on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ globally. So it seems like a good time to brush up on the Yautjan mythology and watch the older movies again in the order that makes the most sense. Here at Collider, we’ve organized the Predator movies in a clear hierarchy so you can enjoy a hassle-free experience and the hunt whenever it’s convenient for you!

Predator Movies in Chronological Order

Although the prequel movie Prey has not yet been produced, the other movies are arranged in a tidy order that also corresponds to their release dates. Even though Prey is included on this list, your watching experience won’t change if you watch it after the first six films.

Therefore, it is up to you whether you want to start your binge-watching experience after the prequel releases on August 5 or reserve it for last. The Predator movies should be viewed in the following order:

Prey (2022)

The epidemic kept delaying the release of the next prequel Prey, which was first slated for 2020. However, the most recent teaser, which was unveiled earlier this month, gives us an official window of release. Prey, a historical fiction novel set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation, is the tale of Naru, a young woman who grows up in the shadow of some of the most illustrious hunters to have ever walked the Great Plains.

Naru is a strong and skilled fighter. She embarks on a mission to defend her people when an unidentified predator threatens her community. A brutal and horrific clash between the two results from the discovery that the monster she chases and eventually faces is a highly evolved alien hunter with a technologically sophisticated arsenal who murders for sport. On August 5, Prey will debut on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ in other countries.

Predator (1987)

Predator, which launched the Predator series and has since gained cult status, has everything a fan of science fiction, action, or horror could desire. The tale follows Vietnam War veteran and commando leader Dutch (Schwarzenegger) and his crew through the rainforests of Central America on a rescue operation, which turns out to be a cover-up for something else.

The movie is frequently cited as one of the best action movies of the 1980s. A highly developed extraterrestrial predator is pursuing them and enjoys the gory game of flaying and ripping them to bits, so there are far worse things to worry about than a cover-up.

Predator 2 (1990)

Due to scheduling conflicts caused by his dedication to The Terminator series, Schwarzenegger left the Predator franchise after Predator 2’s breakthrough in 1987. Predator 2 focuses on the backstory and personality of the Predator while moving the battle to the concrete jungles of Los Angeles (Yautja).

Danny Glover’s Lieutenant Michael Harrigan is working hard to halt the city’s growing cartel activities, but as he discovers a new ruthless killer on the loose and the CIA obstructs his investigation, the case becomes increasingly suspicious.

The situation becomes worse before it gets better, so Harrigan and his small group of dependable policemen take matters into their own hands. It is up to Harrigan to stop this supernatural threat.

Alien Vs. Predator (2004)

Alien Vs. Predator was the first significant on-screen confrontation between the extraterrestrial giants from the two well-known franchises, and it was partially adapted from the comic book series of the same name. A team of scientists investigates a mysterious heat bloom coming from a secret pyramid in Antarctica.

It turns out that the pyramid is actually a ritual chamber that has been used by the Yautjan people since ancient times to breed Xenomorphs using humans as food and as a test for young Yautjans to become warriors and hunters. Only one human and one Predator remain when the scientists unintentionally set off the abandoned settlement, which draws the attention of a spacecraft of Yautjans.

The aliens prove to be too much for even the extraterrestrial hunters, as only one person and one Predator survive. The two survivors strive to get out of the deadly death trap that is around them by forming an odd partnership.

Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

The Predalien, an amalgamation of everyone’s favorite space monsters, appears in Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem, which is set immediately after the events of Aliens Vs. Predator. The Yautjans in the spaceship from the last movie are all wiped off by a Xenomorph that had hidden within the body of their killed friend.

Before being slain by the Predalien, one of the final survivors is able to send a distress signal into outer space while traveling to the earth. In the woods near a small Colorado town, an experienced Yautjan named Wolf locates the beacon and discovers it is inhabited by a swarm of Xenomorphs.

People in the community are locked in a war they do not want to be a part of and a government that looks too eager to “deal with the matter,” thus the struggle that ensues does not turn out well for them.

Predators (2010)

Predators have a lot of similarities to the 1987 film and are frequently regarded as one of the best sequels in the Predator film series. The Yautjans themselves hand-pick a group of the fiercest mercenaries, who are then kidnapped and taken to the forests of an unidentified planet.

The people don’t exactly trust one another, and while they work out their problems, the Yautjans are using them to hunt animals, which is rapidly depleting their numbers. However, a civil war between two tribes is currently raging among the Yautjan people.

Fans describe the movie as a true sequel to Predator in spirit because of the gore, the horror, well-shot action sequences in lush vegetation, and a subtle homage to Dutch from the first movie.

The Predator (2018)

The Predator continues the tale of the Yautjan civilization’s civil war that was briefly addressed in the previous movie. A Yautjan spacecraft crashes on Earth and is brought, along with its alien pilot, to a covert government facility for investigation.

During the investigation, the Predator wakes up, kills everyone in the room save for one unarmed researcher, and then flees. But it turns out to be an escapee, and it is pursued by a Super Predator that is now looking for the technology that was taken from the predator that was trapped.

Now it’s up to a handful of PTSD-stricken soldiers, a scientist, and an autistic boy to survive and figure out how to fight off the gigantic Yautjan before it eats them whole.
