The American Pie series exposed its own horniness to the world as a sleazy cultural icon in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was quintessentially American, youthful, dumb, and full of… fun. Its author famously pitched it at the time as “Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy That Can Be Made For Under $10 Million That Most Readers Will Probably Hate But I Think You, Will Love.”

American Pie, which popularised the now-infamous and widely recognized word “M.I.L.F.” (Mom I’d Like to F***), has remained a pop cultural landmark in movie history, for better or worse. The American Pie series, which has spawned three direct sequels and numerous straight-to-video projects, is a brand, a franchise, and the pinnacle of post-raunchy Porky’s sex comedies.

Old School, Road Trip, and Superbad are just a few examples of films that perpetually follow in their footsteps without necessarily getting better.

In a 2019 interview with The Independent, Chris Weitz, the co-director of the first American Pie, remarked, “If a movie like this were to come out today, I would be extremely astonished. And that, in my opinion, is probably a good thing.”

This supports the claim made by actor Seann William Scott that American Pie couldn’t be produced today. The American Pies are still powerful, expertly made films that are just plain amusing, while feeling rather dated in some areas (particularly in its characterization of female characters as second-class citizens).

Additionally, as you’ll see, the films feature the renowned Eugene Levy in some delightful performances, and whenever Levy appears in an American Pie, it’s worth the proverbial price of admission alone (a metric which could and will, be used to judge the value of these flicks).

The American Pie films ultimately have a structure that includes the theatrical releases (from the 1999 original through the 2012 “reunion”), followed by the unconnected straight-to-video supplements.

It would be preferable to watch the primary cinema releases as a foursome, followed by the straight-to-video attempts because Bar, Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy), and a seemingly never-ending line of Stiflers appear in these movies that aren’t really connected and are set after the events of the original.

If you really want to get every episode, you may also start watching the main series right away because it takes place over a period of a whole 13 years.

American Pie

American Pie is extremely plain and perhaps less of the ’90s gross-out than one may remember it being as it tells the simple tale of some guys trying to lose their virginity before college. Even though it may have a hint of teen boy chauvinism, there’s still a lot of fun to be had with this one, and the male cast members are all excellent in their roles.

However, most people remember it for the women (Alyson Hannigan, Natasha Lyonne, and particularly Jennifer Coolidge) because of the film’s provocative and humorous scenes. But by the time you get to the end, you should be hooked on this pie, which was a box office smash, earning $235 million on just an $11 million budget.

American Pie 2

As the boys head to a beach house for the summer and Jim and Michelle discover their love for one another, American Pie 2 solidified what the original film had established for audiences.

The sex-comedy shenanigans are unavoidably still present here, including embarrassing quid pro quo behavior and mistaking superglue for lubricant. Jim’s trombone scene on stage, which is inappropriate for a genius with special needs, is nevertheless incredibly entertaining.

American Wedding

Jim and Michelle, the primary pair, ultimately decide to be married in American Pie: The Wedding after the original and the incredibly good sequel. Seann William Scott finally gets to expand his wings the most as a d-bag since the directors recognized that he really is the stand-out actor among the males in these movies.

This is especially true in a Finch/Stifler role reversal where they both try to impress (and bed) Michelle’s sister. Fred Willard, a longtime friend of Levy’s, is also prominently featured.

American Reunion (2012)

All the actors have reached adulthood 13 years after the original film’s release; Jim and Michelle now have their own children, and their relationship has struck a tough patch in the bedroom.

Although this may be a needless sequel to a fantastic trilogy, it is impressive to see nearly the whole original ensemble return for this one. Furthermore, the switcheroo involving Stifler having sex with Finch’s mother this time is spectacular.

American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005)

American Pie Presents: Band Camp is the first spin-off of the series. It centers on the now-famous titular camp and elevates Stifler’s brother Matt (before notoriously seen in part one with the webcam) to significant characters. Matt is sentenced to band camp as retribution for a practical joke gone wrong.

The antics in this one, in which Stifler develops a scheme to covertly record his bandmates for an X-rated video, have perhaps aged the worst. This direct-to-video film, which sold over two million copies, also stars Sherman “The Sherminator,” who saw tremendous success in the home video market.

American Pie Presents The Naked Mile (2006)

The de facto protagonist, Erik Stifler, joins up with his other cousin, Dwight, to participate in the fabled naked mile, in which students race through campus in their underwear. Erik is the cousin of Steve and Matt.

American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile felt like it went out of its way to be the one displaying the most nudity for young boys to stare at, and, at the very least, it succeeds at that while having one of the most haphazard and idiotic plots of the bunch.

American Pie Presents Beta House (2007)

Now, Erik and Dwight are back for a pure college comedy film. American Pie Presents: Beta House has its protagonists pledge to a number of risqué pranks, veering toward the more Animal House stylings from which the comedy originally drew inspiration.

This one attempts to make up for the lack of a plot by delving into the grossest of comedies. Unfortunately, it’s just a really stupid movie.

American Pie Presents The Book of Love (2009)

Three unfortunate guys swear to get together all the writers of the book to reconstruct it after discovering The Book of Love, a purported bible for dating that is ultimately unfinished. Unfortunately, this is the spin-off series that, with its simple sets and idiotic performers, appears to be the cheapest of all of them.

It nearly seems like Book of Love is an amateurish parody of the American Pie movies. But as Collider’s Andre Dellamorte notes, “Because it is the fourth direct-to-video installment of the American Pie movies, I can’t criticize this movie. Who is truly to blame if you didn’t know what you were getting when you entered the room?”
