One of the most well-known Marvel characters ever is Doctor Strange, thanks in large part to Benedict Cumberbatch’s outstanding performances as the Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU. But did you realize that before the MCU debuted the character, we had already seen previous depictions of Doctor Strange on the big screen?

Strange made his comic book debut in 1963, and the first big-screen version occurred in the late 1970s. The complete list of all Doctor Strange movies, listed in chronological sequence, may be found here. It includes everything from classic live-action TV movies to animated features, including the Multiverse of Madness.

A Quick Overview of The Chronological Order of The Doctor Strange Films

Before making his 2016 MCU debut, The Sorcerer Supreme was brought to life in live-action versions. Every film, including animated ones, in which Doctor Strange either starred or made a brief cameo appearance is included on this list.

  1. Doctor Strange (1978)
  2. Doctor Strange (2007)
  3. Doctor Strange (2016)
  4. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  5. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  6. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  7. Doctor Strange In the Multiverse Of Madness (2022)

Don’t forget that Doctor Strange will undoubtedly feature in more MCU productions. Nothing has, however, been declared in a formal manner as of yet. Before we see a third Doctor Strange film, Stephen Strange will probably appear in a few cameo appearances.

Explained: The Chronological Order Of The Doctor Strange Films

1. Doctor Strange (1978)

Thomas Lindmer, a world-weary sorcerer played by Sir John Mills, foresees the arrival on Earth of Morgan LeFey, an old foe who has been given control over men’s souls by The Nameless One (David Hooks).

Dr. Stephen Strange (Peter Hooten), a young psychiatry resident, must be given the Guardianship of the Light by Lindmer in order to defeat her evil sorcery. Strange is unaware of his fate.

Reasons to watch it: As silly as the time it was made, this rendering of Stephen Strange is. You’ll most likely laugh a lot because it’s the first-ever big-screen adaptation of Doctor Strange. Strange looks like “’70s,” with his thick beard and curly hair. The acting is also ludicrous, much like the outfits.

In this version, Morgan LeFey is an antiquated sorcerer, while Morgan Strange is a young doctor who was chosen to succeed him as Sorcerer Supreme and battle him. It has a somewhat different origin narrative from the one of the famous physician Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who after an accident tried to study the mystic arts himself.

2. Doctor Strange (2007)

In accordance with the plot synopsis, “Dr. Stephen Strange sets out on a magical adventure to the summit of a Tibetan mountain, where he finds solace at the feet of the enigmatic Ancient One. Strange must first let go of his traumatic past and awaken a gift that is given to only a select few before his wounds may begin to heal.

the magic’s gift. With his newfound authority as the Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange is forced to push himself to the limit as he battles monsters that push against the gates and the most terrifying being ever to exist.

Reasons to watch it: The Marvel Animated Features, which debuted between 2005 and about 2011, contained movies like Thor: Tales of Asgard, The Invincible Iron Man, Ultimate Avengers: The Movie, etc. Doctor Strange (2007) was one of those movies.

Since he was crippled and sought assistance from the Ancient One before realizing that his destiny was to let go of the past and become the new Sorcerer Supreme, the ultimate protector of Earth, this version of Stephen Strange, voiced by Bryce Johnson, has a history that is much more similar to that of the Stephen Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I can’t assess their quality objectively because I enjoyed these animated films as a child, but I did enjoy them. All I can say is that I still find it to be wonderful.

3. Doctor Strange (2016)

The plot of Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” centers on the gifted neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange, who after a fatal automobile accident is forced to put his ego aside and uncover the mysteries of a secret realm of mysticism and parallel universes.

In order to defend the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange, who is based in Greenwich Village, New York City, must serve as a bridge between this world and the afterlife. He does this by using a wide range of metaphysical skills and artifacts.

Reasons to watch it: After only being mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Doctor Strange now makes his first actual appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From a haughty, self-centered neurosurgeon to the familiar and beloved Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch displayed all of his magnificent acting abilities.

Although we didn’t get as much character development as we did later in the MCU, the movie itself was still amazing. Doctor Strange might still have seemed a little mysterious to people who had never heard of the character before the movie. Fortunately for us, that changed, and he evolved into a well-known MCU figure.

4. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

The Incredible Hulk, a former buddy, and fellow Avenger are pitted against the great Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who is imprisoned on the opposite side of the universe, in a deadly gladiatorial match.

Thor is forced to fight for his life in a race against time to stop Hela (Cate Blanchett), the all-powerful being, from destroying his home planet and the Asgardian civilization.

Reasons to watch it: One of my all-time favorite MCU films is Thor: Ragnarok. The soundtrack is fantastic, and Taika Waititi is a brilliant, funny director who made one of the most vivid, energetic, and colorful MCU films yet.

Even though he just had a brief cameo appearance near the opening of the film, Doctor Strange was fantastic in it. It provided a little more context for the Sorcerer Supreme, who had a brief but pivotal part in moving the plot along by bringing Loki and Thor back together.

But we’ve also witnessed his awesomeness and might. The god of mischief and the god of thunder, two of the most powerful Avengers, were simply played with by the man as they were young children. In the grand scheme of the MCU, it made a significant impact on the Sorcerer Supreme’s degree of power.

5. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

A new threat has surfaced from the depths of space: Thanos. The Avengers and their allies have been defending the planet against dangers that are too great for any one person to manage.

He is an intergalactic despot who seeks to acquire all six Infinity Stones, which are powerful artifacts, in order to impose his twisted will on all of reality. The future of Earth and existence have never been more in doubt, and everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this point.

Reasons to watch it: Although Endgame is favored by many fans, I believe that Infinity War is still the best MCU film to date and, outside of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the best comics-based film ever made. It was shocking and captivating, and the conclusion really astounded me.

To combat Thanos, a psychotic purple extraterrestrial who intends to exterminate half of all life in the cosmos, Doctor Strange joins the Avengers. He is seeking the Infinity Stones, and Doctor Strange pledged to defend the Time Stone he wears around his neck in the Eye of Agamotto. He decides to give Thanos the Stone, though.

In an unexpected turn, he says it was the only option. We didn’t understand what that meant until Endgame was released, a full year later.

6. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

dr strange movies in order

Synopsis: “Thanks to the actions of the Mad Titan, Thanos, the universe is in ruins following the tragic events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

The Avengers must come together once more with the assistance of their remaining allies in order to reverse Thanos’s acts and end the turmoil in the cosmos, regardless of the potential repercussions and anyone they confront.

Reasons to watch it: Everyone is now attempting to imitate this since it was the most grandiose climax of more than a decade’s worth of films. Doctor Strange didn’t appear until the last battle, when the remaining Avengers overturned Thanos’ snap, because he had been transformed to dust in the previous film.

We discover that Strange foresaw everything that would occur and that everything that did occur was the only possible scenario if they intended to defeat Thanos. I won’t give away any more spoilers in case there are still people who haven’t seen this movie, but I will say that it’s well worth the three hours it takes to see.

7. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022)

Summary: “Doctor Strange partners up with a mysterious teen girl from his nightmares who has the ability to travel across multiverses to face a number of challenges, including other-universe versions of himself that threaten to obliterate millions across the multiverse. They ask for assistance from Wong, Wanda the Scarlet Witch, and others.

Why you ought to see it Not to mention, Doctor Strange made his final appearance in the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Sam Raimi, the director, created a movie with stunning visuals and a hilarious story. It featured new characters, looked into the multiverse, and revealed the character of Stephen Strange—not merely as a sorcerer, but also as a person.

Interestingly enough, Cumberbatch played three additional versions of Doctor Strange in this film, with the zombie version being my favorite. That really did happen.

Although it’s unknown when and where we’ll see Doctor Strange again, he will undoubtedly make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sooner rather than later, particularly following the post-credit scene in this specific movie.
