The first installment of The Karate Kid franchise, The Karate Kid (1984), was intended to be the first in a planned tetralogy that would also include The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994). However, a remake featuring a different cast of characters and a comparable plot was released in 2010.

In addition to these five films, there was an animated The Karate Kid TV series from 1989, and right now there is a live-action Cobra Kai TV series that is available on Netflix.

Let’s see how to watch the Karate Kid movies and TV programs in the correct order.

Karate Kid Films and Television Programs in Chronological Order:

The characters from the original four Karate Kid movies—The Karate Kid (1984), The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994)—represent the only part of the Miyagi-verse that goes into creating Cobra Kai, according to the film’s creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg.

The Karate Kid (1984)

From New Jersey to California, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) relocates with his mother. She has a fantastic new job, but Daniel finds that the dark-haired Italian from Jersey struggles to blend in with the blue surfers, particularly when he attempts to date one of their women.

Although Daniel successfully avoids multiple battles, he is once apprehended by several lads who attend the same karate club. As the hits knock Daniel out, Pat Morita (old Miyagi) jumps among the youngsters to defeat them. The boys’ karate instructor is the boys’ source of motivation, Miyagi and Daniel discover.

Miyagi assures Daniel that he will impart karate knowledge to him and that they would attend the competition in a few months. Daniel, however, is unable to comprehend what the instructor is demonstrating when the instruction begins. Miyagi believes that painting fences are more important for Daniel than learning karate.

The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

To visit Mr. Miyagi’s dying father, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) travel to Okinawa. Mr. Miyagi admits that his ex-girlfriend is still his true love. However, this finding reignites the ancient animosity that drove him to leave Okinawa years ago.

In the meantime, Daniel makes some new enemies and falls in love again. They are forced to engage in combat.

The Karate Kid: Third Act (1989)

All the pupils fled their instructor Kreese when Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Miyagi (Pat Morita) humiliated the karatekas. As he prepares to leave town, Kreese (Martin Kove) chooses to hand over his keys to his friend Terry (Thomas Ian Griffith). Terry chooses to send him on vacation, and before he departs, he makes a commitment to look after Daniel and Miyagi.

In order to compete against Daniel, Terry plans to bring Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan). Then he goes to see Daniel and Miyagi and identifies himself as Kreese’s friend who wants to make amends for Kreese’s deplorable actions. Then he invites Daniel to a contest he won the previous year.

That shouldn’t be his first priority right now, in Miyagi’s opinion. Daniel accepts Terry’s promise to teach him, but Terry actually sets up a punishing schedule for him and manages to argue with Miyagi.

The Next Karate Kid (1994)

Miyagi (Pat Morita) meets the widow of his former commander at a ceremony honoring Japanese soldiers who died in World War II. She introduces him to her granddaughter Julie (Hilary Swank), a bitter adolescent who is suffering from the tragic loss of her parents.

Julie is antisocial anyway, so the two of them don’t get along at all. Miyagi makes the decision to rehabilitate her by teaching her karate.

Cobra Kai (2018–)

The events of the franchise’s first movie take place 30 years prior to the plot of Netflix’s unexpected smash. Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, the main characters, spend their days in California, and they continue to be strangers.

One lives in total luxury, while the other barely scrape by. Their paths cross again as a result of a confluence of events, and a brand-new narrative with fresh characters—who the protagonists, later on, learn to regard as mentors—begins.

The Karate Kid (1989)

The karate competition premise is swapped out for a quest-based adventure, however, Joey Dedio’s character Daniel LaRusso and Robert Ito’s character Mr. Miyagi continue to appear in the show. A little shrine with magical abilities that have been stolen from its resting place in Okinawa is found by Miyagi and Daniel.

As the karatekas travel the world, Taki Samurai (voiced by Janice Kawaye) joins them. Naturally, they come across many opportunities to use their martial arts to get out of sticky situations.

Pat Morita, who once again played Mr. Miyagi, provided a pre-show narration in which he described the episode’s narrative from Mr. Miyagi’s point of view. Morita provided the narration for all but episode 8 of the series.

Nevertheless, we are excluding this TV program from the primary timeline because Cobra Kai executive producer and co-creator Jon Hurwitz claimed that “The Karate Kid cartoon is not canon. In Season 3, nevertheless, there is an Easter Egg from it.

The Karate Kid (2010)

A single woman and her kid Dre relocate to China because of business obligations. Due to cultural disparities and mistreatment by local goons, he feels unhappy in Beijing. Due to his language barrier and social awkwardness, he swiftly succumbs to desperation.

But Mr. Han, who Dre encounters, ends up being his mentor in both language and combat skills. Characters from the 2010 remake will not be used in Cobra Kai since they are not a part of the “Miyagi-verse,” according to the creators of the film in a 2021 interview with Slashfilm.

“That has been entirely ruled out. The first season of the show makes reference to Jackie Chan as a human, thus I assume that in real life, Jackie Chan works as an actor and performer. If the characters from our show have ever watched The Karate Kid, they have.
