The Thor Movies: How to Watch Them in Order (Chronological And Release Date Order)

thor movies in order

How do I view the Thor films chronologically? One of the biggest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Thor, the Prince of Asgard, and the God of Thunder. He bravely fought alongside the Avengers against dangers like Ultron, Thanos, and even his own brother Loki.

We often have several different ideas in mind when we go to the movies or simply browse our TVs for the ideal movie to pass the time. Sometimes all we want is to laugh; other times, all we want is a thrill, whether it comes in the form of action, terror, or even a fantastic mystery.

Depending on the mood, we can be looking for amazing effects, gorgeous sights, or a clever narrative. But at the end of the day, what we’re truly looking for is a compelling story arc—one that draws us in and has a satisfying resolution. And if you enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor Odinson, the God of Thunder, has the best plot arc.

But how did Thor become a sage old god from a brash godling? You’ll have to watch every Thor movie in order to find out, but where should you start? Do not fret, my reader. You can follow Thor’s progression throughout all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films because we’ve reviewed every movie he appears in, including the shorts.

Thor (2011)

Thor, directed by none other than Kenneth Branagh, tells the character’s origin tale and features Chris Hemsworth as the haughty prince of Asgard who is exiled to Earth after almost initiating a war with the Frost Giants.

When Thor (Natalie Portman) meets Jane while he is on Earth, she teaches him the lesson of humility, making him deserving of his hammer. Thor then goes to Asgard to stop his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from overthrowing Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

Avengers (2012)

To prevent Loki from assembling Thanos’ army and capturing control of the planet, Thor travels back to Earth. Thor joins Earth’s mightiest heroes following a fight with Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), as Loki proves to be too much for him to handle this time.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor is summoned back to Earth to look into the Aether, a potent Dark Elf weapon, after stopping the chaos overtaking the Nine Realms. Jane has been contaminated by this unusual crimson mist, making her the target of Malekith, a dictatorial Dark Elf who seeks to possess the Aether for himself.

Thor declines the throne of Asgard, Odin is exiled to Earth, and Loki dies (but not really) in a fight that takes place in Greenwich. The sole positive aspect of the messy and tiresome Dark World is that it introduces one of the Infinity Stones.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Thor spent his time with the Avengers fighting to destroy Hydra outposts all around the world after turning down the throne of Asgard. Thor is about to head back to his house after the last stronghold has been destroyed when Ultron, a malevolent mechanical menace, attacks.

Truthfully, Thor doesn’t really do much in this movie other than whack robots with his hammer (though he does give Ultron the spark of creation he needs to come to life), and he spends the majority of the time worried about the Infinity Stones. Oh, and he discovers that Cap could be hiding something regarding Mjolnir.

Team Thor 1 and 2 (2016-2017)

These short films (directed by Taika Waititi, which may or may not be canon) depict what Thor was up to throughout the Civil War and mark the beginning of his transformation from the Avengers’ mainstay to comic relief. He basically lived off his patient roommate Darryl while he was in Australia.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor’s transformation from a drab Viking warrior to an otherworldly Viking was shown in the movie Ragnarok. For the sake of this movie, Thor’s entire persona is altered, and it works fantastically, reframing the character as a comic, slightly buffoonish, but ultimately a well-intentioned hero.

The superhero comedy movie begins with Thor attempting to avert Ragnarok and concludes with him (with some assistance from Loki, Valkyrie, and the Hulk, who is still very much alive) wrecking Asgard in order to kill his long-lost sister Hela, the God of Death.

Funny, irreverent, and thrilling The gold standard by which all other Thor films should be evaluated is Thor: Ragnarok. Major narrative developments include the abolition of Asgard, the destruction of Mjolnir, Thor discovering that his power derives from inside, and Loki finally realizing that he belongs by his brother’s side.

Team Darryl (2018)

This amusing little movie, which was also directed by Waititi, was featured on the Ragnarok DVD and features the Grandmaster as Darryl’s new roommate (Jeff Goldblum). It proceeds about how you would anticipate.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

As Infinity War picks up immediately after Ragnarok, when Thanos chokes Loki to death and the Children of Thanos decimate half of the Asgardians in their hunt for the Infinity Stones, Thor is at his lowest point ever.

Desperate for retribution To create a new weapon for the God of Thunder that can destroy Thanos before he collects all the stones, Thor and a portion of the Guardians of the Galaxy embark on a quest.

The Mad Titan had time to snap his fingers and wipe off half of all life in the cosmos even if Thor was successful in getting his hands on a new hammer but failed to attack the head.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Thor has deteriorated into a shell of his former self in the five years since the Avengers were unable to stop Thanos. He is unwilling to even attempt to collect the Infinity Stones because he is depressed and obese. Thor gets his confidence after having a chance encounter with his deceased mother (time travel has its benefits).

He assists Cap and Stark in the final battle against a different Thanos, and after that conflict, Thor cedes the throne of Asgard to Valkyrie and embarks on an intergalactic journey with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Thor is seen hanging out with the Guardians in the opening scene of Love and Thunder after returning to his godly form. Odinson responds to the call as the brand-new Marvel bad guy Gorr begins murdering the gods.

Oh, and Jane is once again using a repaired Mjolnir, which will aid the erstwhile Prince of Asgard in completing his quest.
