Early Years and Education
Joshua William Dun was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 18, 1988. He is the son of Laura Lee Dun (née McCollum), who works as a hospice social worker, and William Earl “Bill” Dun, who works as a physical therapy assistant.
He has a brother and two sisters. Edwin Dun, an American rancher who helped Japan with farming, and Tsuru, his Japanese wife, were his great-great-great-grandparents. When he was young, he mostly listened to punk rock.
His parents had strict rules about what kind of music he could listen to “I would hide albums like Dookie by Green Day under my bed. They would sometimes find them and get very angry.
They would find an alternative Christian band, like Relient K, and force me to listen to that.” First, he took trumpet lessons at school. Then, he switched to drums and taught himself how to play them.
