Remembrance Day, observed every year in the UK and Commonwealth, honors military personnel who have lost their lives while performing their duties. The yearly memorial, also known as Armistice Day, is observed on November 11 in remembrance of the 1918 Armistice that brought an end to World War One.

People wear red poppies, which sprouted on the battlefields following World War One, in remembrance of Britain’s soldiers, and observe a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. It celebrates the official conclusion of World War One, which occurred “at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” when the armistice was signed.

Poem 1: For The Fallen by Laurence Binyon

England mourns for her dead across the water in a mother’s joyful thankfulness.

They were the soul of her spirit and flesh of her flesh, falling in the cause of the free. The solemn beat of the drums; august and royal death. There is a song in the middle of ruin and glory that beams upon our tears, singing grief up into heavenly spheres.

They were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady, and aglow as they marched into combat with songs. They faced the enemy as they fell, but they remained steadfast until the end against overwhelming odds.
