El-Abbadi graduated from the University of Alexandria with honours when he was 22 years old. In addition, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Quebec-Montréal and a BA and PhD from the University of Cambridge.

At the University of Alexandria, the historian was a lecturer with a focus on Greco-Roman studies.
