Criticism is harsh Elon Musk generated a lot of “Vox Populi Vox Dei” tweets after suspending his journalists, but what does that phrase actually mean?

With his most recent Twitter shenanigans, Elon Musk has stirred up some controversy once more, and in today’s news, opponents are condemning the CEO for suspending the journalists who allegedly broke the platform’s new privacy rules by exposing users’ real locations.

By providing details on the now-suspended ElonJet account, a service that tracked his personal plane, Musk claimed the journalists were doxxing. The creator of SpaceX defended his decision by stating that the journalists had published his “precise real-time location, which is essentially assassination coordinates, in (apparent) direct violation of Twitter rules of service.”

His “Vox Populi Vox Dei” tweet has recently been under fire for its irony, but what does it actually mean, and how does it relate to the suspensions?

After Musk claimed the journalists jeopardized his safety, a number of well-known journalists, including Donie O’Sullivan of CNN, Drew Harwell of The Washington Post, Matt Binder of Mashable, and Ryan Mac of the New York Times, were banned from Twitter.

Musk responded to a fan by saying, “Same doxxing regulations apply to ‘journalists’ as to everyone else. The journalists have received a seven-day temporary suspension.

Criticizing me all day is absolutely acceptable, but putting my family in danger by publishing their whereabouts in real-time is not, he continued.

On Thursday night (December 15, 2022), the 51-year-old published a poll asking his 121.6 million followers when the journalists should be restored.

With four choices from “now” to “seven days from now,” immediate unsuspension received the highest percentage of votes (43%).

Vox Populi Vox Dei Meaning Explained

The Latin phrase “Vox Populi Vox Dei” means “the voice of the people [is] the voice of God.”

According to Newsweek, the phrase was first used in a letter from cleric Alcuin of York to Chharlemagne, King of the Franks, in 798.

On November 19, Musk mentioned the same words on Twitter and predicted Donald Trump would be reinstated. 15 million votes, or 51.8%, supported the previous president’s election again.

Ironically, supporters are now accusing the billionaire of canceling the poll because the results weren’t in his favor.
