Who Is Claudine Gay?

Political scientist Claudine Gay was reputedly born in the Bronx, New York, and is currently 52 or 53 years old. Her parents, who are both Haitian immigrants and met as students before getting married, also have engineering degrees.

Claudine graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in 1992, and she then got a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1998.

Before accepting a post as a professor of government at Harvard in 2006, she held the positions of assistant professor and associate professor at Stanford.

Claudine previously held the position of professor of African and African-American Studies before taking on the role of dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) in 2018.

Get to Know Claudine Gay’s Husband

Research analyst and instructor Christopher C. Afendulis. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan.

He was a senior research analyst at the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research (CPCO) and the Center for Health Policy (CHP) (PCOR).

According to Stanford University, Christopher works as an information systems analyst in the department of health research and policy.

From 2015 to 2018, Christopher served as a research associate at Harvard for health policy. Prior to that, from 2006 until 2015, he taught health policy.

Claudine Speaks on New Harvard Role

After former Harvard president Lawrence S. Bacow announced his intention to leave office after five years, Claudine assumed her new position.

“I am humbled by the confidence that the governing boards have placed in me and by the prospect of replacing President Bacow in managing this wonderful institution,” Claudine said in a statement to the Harvard Gazette. Working with Larry over the past five years has been an honor.

“He has shown me that leadership isn’t about one person,” she continued. I will carry that lesson with me on this next journey: it’s about us all moving forward together.

Beginning on July 1, 2023, Claudine will assume leadership of the university as its 30th president.
