The Movie Was Supposed to Be Released in December

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was expected to arrive during the 2022 Christmas season, however, the toys arrived three months before the movie.

Prior to Christmas, it was supposed to be released on December 21, but on April 25, producer Shigeru Miyamoto announced they were delaying it until spring 2023.

She announced the change on Twitter, writing, “After discussing it with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros film, we agreed to move the global release to Spring 2023.” My sincere apologies, but I assure you the wait will be worthwhile.

The actual explanation of the delay has not been made public, however, it may have been due to production issues or a desire to avoid conflicting with the December 16 release of Avatar 2.

It would not have been able to postpone the toys until April because McDonald’s Happy Meal collaborations are planned years in advance.
